with sphinx 1.6.1, building e.g. the s-g docs prints the following warning

/usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/sphinx/application.py:444: RemovedInSphinx17Warning: app.status_iterator() is now deprecated. Use sphinx.util.status_iterator() instead.

Add a compatibility shim for app.status_iterator.

This will avoid a warning with new versions of Sphinx and any trouble
when it gets fully removed.
