The PEAR channel should be considered deprecated as Composer is now the de-facto much better standard to manage dependencies.

hmm but why remove it as an option? maybe just reverse the order ..

Why would we recommend something that is fundamentally flawed (installing a library globally on a computer) and not really maintained anymore?

what kind of traffic numbers do we have on the pear installer?

I don't have any traffic numbers as the PEAR channel is hosted on Amazon S3 and I have not enabled logging. But I can make a quick poll to figure that out.

The poll is here (http://twtpoll.com/emr4rm) and based on the first results, PEAR is clearly out of the game now.
