Similar to winpython/winpython.github.io#61 and per spyder-ide/spyder-docs#39 ;

  • I've updated the Spyder project descriptions a bit and did some minor cleanup (mainly capatilization-related
  • I've also added links for each under the url property for each since I see other packages have that.
  • Trailing whitespace cleanup

Again, if there's a problem with either of the second two commits, let me know and I'll fix or revert/drop them. I didn't do the HTTPS conversion here since it seemed a bit more out of scope.

Also, @stonebig I wanted to get your input before I did anything but can we update the latest version of each of the changelogs with the link to the actual spyder website instead of just PyPI (as most of the other big packages have) and the updated full name/description? Or at least make sure it gets updated in the next version of all of them? Figure you'd know much better than I the best way to handle this.

This package.ini file is a pain to maintain.

This file does exist because:

  • pip wheel didn't exist at the start of the project,
  • WinPython wanted to simplify the package management,
  • and so the WPPM does still exist.

Now that pypi and wheel do exist also, I'm looking rather to suppress manual maintenance of this file:

  • use pypi "short description" of the project (the first line, if more than one),
  • links to official webpage are to find on pypi page of the project,
  • having it done per a script, during build time.

Okay, thanks. So will an automatic update via PyPI happen very soon, then? Unfortunately our PyPI page also has a number of errors and out of date elements as well, including not having a link to our new site, our current full project name (with proper capitalization), nor an up to date or well-written description. I'll need to fix that in our setup.py and hopefull it will go out with Spyder 3.3.1 in the next few days.

I updated everything in setup.py for PyPI and that went in as spyder-ide/spyder#7582 , so as Soon™ as 3.3.1 gets pushed to PyPI everything will be updated there. Therefore, the relevance of this PR depends on how soon you're going to implement the described procedure of retrieving this information from PyPI. If it is (or seems likely it will be) after the later of the next Spyder and next WinPython releases, then I would urge you to accept this PR so WinPython doesn't continue to ship with a very outdated long-name, links and description for Spyder and its related packages. Thanks!
