This paper examines the experience of business incubation as an innovative developmental instrume... more This paper examines the experience of business incubation as an innovative developmental instrument based on the recent experience of the South American countries of Brazil and Chile and the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. A qualitative research method was adopted involving a review of published reports, journal articles and relevant case studies; and face-to-face semi-structured interviews with incubator managerial staff. The major findings are that there are great similarities among the incubators studied in terms of their links to universities, services offered, and funding challenges, but there is growing acceptance of incubation as a potentially valid tool for promoting business development and innovation although most incubators are at the early stage. Leadership is an area of study that dates back several decades with the emphasis placed on indivi... more Leadership is an area of study that dates back several decades with the emphasis placed on individual leaders particularly those in political and military fields. With the evolution of the practice of leadership and its application to organizations, the concept of team leadership gained attention. The main aim of the article is to outline a model for promoting team leadership in organizations with special emphasis on developing and emerging countries. A two stage qualitative research methodology was adopted involving collection and analysis of secondary published data for the purpose of identifying the main concepts and themes relating to leadership, followed by the integration of the most relevant concepts into the design of a team leadership model. The article is valuable as the creation of models to guide the leadership of teams are sparse especially with applications to developing-country contexts. There are implications for the management of organizations in most jurisdictions, but particularly countries where modern leadership practices lag behind best practices.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the key issues involved in the process of mergers and acq... more The purpose of this paper is to examine the key issues involved in the process of mergers and acquisitions of companies and to explore the experience in a small developing country. The methodological approach adopted is largely qualitative with data collected on mergers and acquisitions from relevant published journals, specialist papers, technical reports with raw statistics, stock exchange information obtained online, and printed media announcements. The findings revealed that the merger and acquisition process is of varying complexity depending on the type of firms involved, the business environment, and the cultural context. In developing countries where stock exchanges are not vibrant, merger activity requires stimulation through special incentives and this situation is particularly applicable to small countries. A secondary research approach was adopted based on a review of published texts, journals, and technical reports. The results of the study demonstrate that based on the indicators of capital market development, the high-income developing country of Trinidad and Tobago used as a case study, lags behind in critical areas of development of its capital market and, along with related developing countries, can benefit from the fundamental principles involved in the practice of corporate finance. The practical implications of the study are the potential use by students in tertiary level institutions engaged in MBA or financial management studies, participants pursuing professional qualifications in accounting and finance, employees in financial institutions, and general stakeholders seeking to invest funds. The article has a twofold purpose of gaining an understanding of the main features and characteristics of the open access journal system through a review of the literature; and assessing the extent of adoption of open access by researchers in the management discipline through a review of the management publications by the University of the West Indies (UWI) researchers. A sequential exploratory strategy of two phases was used. Using multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is necessary for accurate brain tumor segmentat... more Using multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is necessary for accurate brain tumor segmentation. The main problem is that not all types of MRIs are always available in clinical exams. Based on the fact that there is a strong correlation between MR modalities of the same patient, in this work, we propose a novel brain tumor segmentation network in the case of missing one or more modalities. The proposed network consists of three sub-networks: a featureenhanced generator, a correlation constraint block and a segmentation network. The feature-enhanced generator utilizes the available modalities to generate 3D feature-enhanced image representing the missing modality. The correlation constraint block can exploit the multi-source correlation between the modalities and also constrain the generator to synthesize a feature-enhanced modality which must have a coherent correlation with the available modalities. The segmentation network is a multi-encoder based U-Net to achieve the final brain tumor segmentation. The proposed method is evaluated on BraTS 2018 dataset. This study examines the progress of the two major universities in the Caribbean country of Trinid... more This study examines the progress of the two major universities in the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago towards the transition to entrepreneurial universities through incorporating the core components of designing and delivering entrepreneurship education programmes, establishing effective university-led business incubators and the building of university–industry–government collaboration. The theoretical construct of the Triple Helix interrelationships and the development stages framework provide the basis for analysing the progress of the universities towards achieving their development mission. The general conclusion is that progress towards building an effective university-centred entrepreneurial ecosystem has been relatively slow and needs to be accelerated through more proactive leadership and greater involvement of internal and external stakeholders.

While there is a growing body of research on the subject of entrepreneurship education and learning, studies of the executive master of business administration (EMBA) are relatively sparse. This article offers an example of an entrepreneurship course specifically tailored to the more mature and experienced EMBA participants. The curriculum offered in this article is the result of 25 years of teaching, testing and refining of content and learning approaches in a university setting. The argument is that the course, as currently designed, can serve as a template for courses to be conducted in business schools located in similar cultural contexts and economic environments.

A secondary research approach was adopted based on a review of published texts, journals, and technical reports. Its value further lies in its contribution to the understanding of the field of corporate finance and related issues and identification of implications for developing economies. The research is limited to the extent that only secondary data sources were explored and insights from practitioners through interviews were not obtained thus pointing to scope for future research.
