FAQ

Basics:

What is a zine?
A zine, short for fanzine (a combination of “fan” and “magazine”), is an unofficial publication, generally focused on a particular genre or piece of media.

What is Bloody Howling?

Zine Info:

Who is organizing the zine? What is the age rating?
The mods for this zine are Kris and Sammi! The age rating for this zine is PG, so you can add a bit of blood if the work calls for it. No hard gore.

What will the dimensions of the zine be? Will the zine be printed?
The zine will be A4 (8.27” x 11.69”). You can read more on the Guidelines Page.

Where will the money earned by this zine be going?

Applications:

Who can apply to this zine?
We will be accepting artists only! Previous zine experience is not necessary. Please check our schedule to ensure that you will not have any issues with the deadlines.

How many people will be accepted?
We are planning to accept 20 artists, as well as a cover artist, someone to draw stickers, and someone to create an extra print! After those 23, you can be added to a pinch hit list. If a selected person drops out, we will ask if you are willing to take their spot.

Submissions:

What type of content is appropriate for the theme?
It is a Halloween-themed zine, so creepy content is accepted. Even cute stuff like trick or treating works! When in doubt, you can always send us an ask.

Are spoilers allowed in the pieces?
Yes, you can include spoilers in your piece.

Can the pieces contain ships or pairings?
Romance is not the focus of this zine.

Are there any other restrictions for the pieces?
No hard gore, but you can add creepy elements. Ask the mods if you have any concerns. All pieces must be SFW and appropriate for all ages. These pieces must also be new and made specifically for the zine, not previously made and published pieces.

Participants:

Will I receive a copy of the zine for participating? What can I do with my work after the zine is published?
Participants will be sent a free print copy of the zine, as well as a copy of the extras if demand allows. After the zine is published, you will have full rights to your own work. Sell it as a print, publish it online, share it with the world! Please provide a link to the zine when you do, to help keep the charity going.

What kind of portfolio should I provide?

Please provide a link to a dedicated art blog, twitter, or website. If you find your art is scattered around in your social media, find a way to stash your best stuff in one place. At least 3 pieces of art should be provided.

What should the dimensions of my piece be?
The dimensions of your piece must be A4 (8.27” x 11.69”), with a resolution of 300dpi. Pieces should be created in CMYK for printing. Paint Tool SAI doesn’t have a CMYK option, so keep that in mind if you use it.

How finished does my piece have to be? Does my piece have to have a full background?
Your piece should be as finished as your art style allows for. We will not accept sketches or uncoloured pieces for final submissions. White or overly simple backgrounds are discouraged. Full backgrounds or highly detailed backdrops are preferred. When in doubt, ask a mod!
