Chapter 15: (JASON XIV)- LONG LOST MEMORIES
“How are you not complaining about this more?” Percy asked Jason as he just casually tried to keep going. “This is literally the house you go to to complain when something isn’t fair.”
“Not sure how Chiron would feel about that title,” Annabeth frowned at him.
“This isn’t about him,” Percy kept his eyes on Jason. “You’re allowed to not be raised by a wolf here.”
What went unsaid wasn’t lost on Jason. There weren’t ‘weak’ kids here, they wouldn’t survive here if there were, but he at least had the liberty to not let that be his sole identity. Despite what the camp tried to prove otherwise in keeping them sorted to sleep with their siblings, nobody was forcing Percy to run this camp when he came back from saving the world.
Nico’s breath caught in the back of his throat and he had to look quickly away in simmering jealousy of Jason getting told that, and clearly not acting on it. What he would have given once for Percy to give him that kind of attention he’d so desperately needed to hear…
But Jason just nodded to him gratefully and turned back to keep reading. He’d never know who he really wanted to be if he never knew who he’d been.
JASON XIV
JASON WOKE TO THE SOUND OF THUNDER. Then he remembered where he was. It was always thundering in Cabin One.
Concept: So I’ve been thinking a lot about Beryl Grace lately and I wanted to talk about that.
It starts with the fact that Jason doesn’t resemble his father at all.
It’s Thalia who looks and acts like Zeus when she’d rather be anything else. And it’s Jason who wants to be like his father and resembles there mother.
I’ve always loved this idea that Jason and Beryl are mirrors of each other in more than just physical appearance.
That both are these natural borne performers. Beryl with her career and Jason in the way he acts the way everyone wants him to be.
Jason is a Roman that feels torn between these conflicting identities of Greek and Roman. Which could apply to his father but I also see it in the way Beryl “tempted” and fell for both Jupiter and Zeus.
I imagine that the idea of a mortal being able to bring out both aspects of him and make him stay for as long as he did wasn’t something Zeus was particularly proud off.
And I love the idea of him being reminded of that when Jason calls him unwise before the Olympian council.
This show of power that both of them have wielded that undermines his own.
The way that Beryl has shaped Jason’s whole life even beyond the grave. It’s her broken promise that made him never break his own.
Beryl abandoned him to save herself and yet Jason died because he would never choose himself.
And the way both her and Jason’s stories end in tragedy. Now Beryl is an abuser and I don’t want to make light of that. But I feel it’s fair to say that she was also a victim.
Someone who fell in love with what could never be hers and the way she spiralled destroyed her life and her children’s.
And then you have Jason whose first relationship was built upon false memories. A relationship he tried to keep alive and even when it ended he destroyed himself to save Piper and Apollo.
I did have a fic that unfortunately did not pan out the way I wanted it too and thus is abandoned. But the premise was what if when Jason died he regained his memories?
And all those emotions of essentially grieving himself corrupted him. Turning Jason into a maniac, just like what happened to his Beryl..
In many ways Jason is his mother’s son and it’s such an interesting aspect to explore. Not to mention hey what if things went different.
What if the love for her kids was stronger then her infatuation with there fathers.
What if…
