So one of my tweets kinda blew up. :v

This reminds me of the time that a Hungarian doctor called Ignaz Semmelweiss noticed that the bulk of patients in a maternity ward treated by doctors were dying horribly, while the ones treated by nurses were more likely to survive.

He figured out that this was because the doctors were dissecting corpses inbetween delivering babies, while the nurses weren’t, and came up with his controversial “hey, why don’t we all wash our filthy, filthy hands before sticking them in a woman?” theory.

The result, short term, was that the mortality rate on this one maternity ward decreased by a ridiculous amount. They went from “write your will before you come here, because you’re probably gonna die” to “we’re not 100% sure, but you’ll probably live”.

The result, long term, was that Semmelweiss was hated by absolutely everybody, lost his reputation and had his career suffer terribly.

His eventual reward was that eventually people finally started sashimg their hands with soap before operations, history remembers him as a misunderstood hero, and the instinctive angry and defensive reaction so many people give whenconfronted with new ideas that conflict with their established view of the world is now called ‘the Semmelweiss reflex’.

Because some people care more about themselves not being wrong than they do about things in general being right.

I know it shouldn’t be surprising after well over a year of genocide in Gaza backed by the US, but I feel like the world moved on way too quick wrt Trump texting orders to massacre Yemenis with fire emojis. It’s crazy that the indignation of this massacre being leaked took precedence in mainstream discourse over the massacre of Yemenis. Not even the casual, gleeful callousness with which it was done made most reporting. Arab lives truly mean so little. Arabs don’t have lives at all. Our lives and the lives of our kin are so dehumanised that a world leader texting orders for Yemenis to be slaughtered via drone like a video game is indeed spoken of like a video game. the most outcry the mainstream can muster is how despicable it is that it wasn’t kept a secret….not outrage that it happened at all…I guess it worked. All those movies with islamic terrorist villains, 25+ years of news media manufacturing consent for the occupation and slaughter of Iraqis, decades of DoD influence in Hollywood, all the times Israel’s version of events was prioritised - it really did such a great job that the president of the US can massacre Yemenis with a text, the text is leaked, and people are mostly just mad that the text leaked.

Top Trump official Stephen Miller’s recent declaration that anyone who “preaches hate for America” will face deportation has ignited alarm online, with critics warning the statement disregards First Amendment protections.

The controversy began during a Monday morning appearance from the White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy on Fox News. Miller was defending the deportation of a Salvadoran national alleged to be involved in gang activity, as well as the pending removal of Mahmoud Khalil, a protester accused of supporting Hamas.

While Miller discussed a federal judge’s authorization to deport Khalil, and the online debate that followed quickly turned toward broader implications for dissent and political expression.
