i need to know how having a partner to protect you & help you find food conveys no survival advantage.

not every organism is fertile or destined to breed, & once it realizes it's infertile it doesn't simply self destruct because it cannot benefit the survival of the species - it goes on. anything that benefits the survival of the individual still counts as a worthy advantage to the organism, even if it doesn't contribute to propagation of the species.

The most prominent theory in zoology is that every adaptation exists to pass on your genes. Because an animal that doesn’t pass on its genes doesn’t contribute to the evolution of the species as a whole.

As an asexual, I do not always agree with this reasoning. You can imagine me squirming in my seat as time and time again I heard professors harp on the fact that an organism’s main goal is to reproduce. So what does that make me if I have no interest in reproducing? A failure of an organism? Why do I exist? Biologists have tried to make excuses for why homosexuality and even asexually keeps showing up in so many different species that have no way of passing on those inclinations.

Remember that Attenborough is talking about birds and not humans in this clip, and it’s his job to add a scientific explanation to the behaviors on screen. I don’t blame him for the script here because “Propagation is Main Priority” is often the explanation for any zoological behavior. It’s “survive long enough to make babies.” I just… don’t think that’s always the correct explanation. Sometimes birds and other animals choose same sex partnerships even when surrounded by a wealth of opposite sex choices. It just happens.

Obviously, species have to propagate to evolve and pass on adaptations. But I think sometimes organisms are just individuals who are living their life, and maybe making babies isn’t that organisms’ top priority, Freud.

one thing about tumblr at least here they’re just called “posts”. Saying “I saw this tweet/reel/tiktok/short” makes me feel like I’m ordering at a restaurant where they make you say Texas Tom’s Nut-Slappin Griddle-Chizzle instead of grilled cheese

In 1992, Sinead O'Connor ripped up a picture of the Pope on live television, in protest of the rampant child sexual abuse the Catholic Church was actively covering up.

Ten days later, she was scheduled to perform at Madison Square Gardens, as part of a celebration of Bob Dylan. As soon as she got to the microphone, the audience began loudly booing her, seemingly in unison.

The organizers tasked Kris Kristofferson with removing O'Connor from the stage. He instead went out and put his arm around her and checked in on her and stayed until she'd steadied herself and was ready to perform. When she came off stage, he wrapped her in a bear hug.

"Sinead had just recently on Saturday Night Live torn up a picture of the Pope, in a gesture that I thought was very misunderstood. And she came out and got booed. They told me to go get her off the stage and I said 'I'm not about to do that'

I went out and I said 'Don't let the bastards get you down'. She said 'I'm not down' and she sang. It was very courageous. It just seemed wrong to me, booing that little girl out there. But she's always had courage."

you don't "hate kids," you hate being forced into a caretaking role.

you don't "hate kids," you hate censorship passed off as family values.

you don't "hate kids," you hate the constrictiveness of the nuclear family.

you don't "hate kids," you're just not used to occupying fully age diverse spaces so you're not used to the noise or the many different kinds of needs.

you don't "hate kids," most public spaces just aren't built for kids, and so the few kids you see are always uncomfortable and distressed.

you don't "hate kids," you hate the intense social rules assigned to kids and anyone who interacts with kids.

You don't "hate kids," you hate how society reproduces its most restrictive elements and how kids are powerless to resist it.
