Like, okay, I love Taco Bell nachos. I love them so much. At time of filming, those cost a little under $3. If someone asked me if they were worth it, I would say, “Yes, certainly!” If tomorrow, they suddenly cost $20, I would immediately be able to say, “Oh, mm-mm, no. No, they’re not worth that.” I wouldn’t say, “Well, I really like them, so I suppose if you can afford it, they’re worth it.” I would say no, they’re worth around $3. Maybe up to five, if I was desperate.

This segment from jenny nicholsons star wars hotel video keeps playing in my head whenever people talk about the cost of video games these days so i’m clipping it because it’s relatable to me.

If you live in Arkansas, I need your help!

And don’t worry, you don’t have to tell me you live there!

I don’t typically try to talk about what state I’m in very loudly as this is the internet and I like protecting my privacy, but I have an important issue I need to get to as many people as possible, so I’m pulling out all the stops. Today (4/7/25), the Arkansas House of Representatives is going to vote on SB 536, which aims to abolish the State Library. It would transfer the duties of the State Library over to the Department of Education, which is not the greatest idea as that department is already overrun, underfunded, and understaffed, so adding a whole new department of duties wouldn’t be good for education in Arkansas. It would also make Arkansas the only state without a State Library, and if they can pull it off here, I worry about other states following suit. It also would create “mandatory open hours” for libraries based on population size, which could lead to some smaller libraries shutting down due to underfunding. And, like all library bills nowadays, Senator “Book Ban” Dan Sullivan (trying to get the nickname to catch on, help me out!) has added a clause about not having access to “age inappropriate” materials for teens, which would have us lock up the sex education materials and includes “human genitalia” and “sexual contact” in the definition of “age inappropriate,” which sounds great until you realize it will 1) disproportionately ban LGBT (particularly the T) books and stories that talk about trans experiences, even when geared towards teens, and 2) will ban things such as Breaking Dawn, Looking for Alaska, and other books explicitly geared towards helping teenagers learn about such things in a controlled environment.

Overall, this bill comes with the looming threat of shutting down libraries, which is a scary reality. It continues a pattern of increasingly scary bills introduced to defund public libraries across the United States.

BUT! I don’t say this to scare you! I come to you with something very easy you can do to help, if you’d like to!

IF you live in Arkansas, you can go to this webpage and fill out this form to contact your representative. It doesn’t take long at all, but I’d recommend doing it as soon as you see this given that the vote is today.

IF you live outside of Arkansas, literally anywhere else, you can share this so the word gets around. OR if you’re elsewhere in the US, you can sign a petition with EveryLibrary to help other library, archival, anti-censorship, or freedom of information causes.

I wanna keep this post as little pressure as possible, especially since it only applies to a small subset of people on this site, but I’m feeling a little stressed about this bill’s potential passing. I’ll likely delete this post after the vote today. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

And, just for my curiosity, you can vote here in this poll, but again for privacy’s sake, you don’t have to actually tell me where you’re from!

Which applies to you?

I’m currently living in Arkansas and plan to fill out that form.

I’m NOT currently living in Arkansas and plan to sign a petition.

I don’t plan to do anything after seeing this post (totally fine!)

Update!

The committee decided not to meet on this today, and I’m hearing they’ll instead meet Wednesday (4/9). So there’s more time, if you want to spread it around!

37 people were illegally detained in Bellingham, Washington for the ‘crime’ of speaking Spanish. This is so fucking inhumane and cruel

⬆️ racial unity now is matching funds for the detainees and their families. please help if you can.

it’s shameful how long i had to look to find an article covering this story that gives more information besides saying “37 undocumented workers were arrested wednesday.” cascadia news and the AP were the only sources i found that include any journalism whatsoever beyond the police report.

Hey, this is local for me. It would mean a lot if you could help out even a little bit.

“Being treated like an enemy and a traitor because we had the temerity to survive is seemingly one of the core transmasculine experiences.

…Trans men are literally dying in the closet, just to prove to you how good they are, how not-toxic and not-sexist and not-selfish they are, how committed they are to "changing womanhood from the inside,” how much they care about you and about women and about feminism – they’re dying, and they’re still trying to keep you comfortable, and you can’t be bothered to care about them for one brief second. Take that thought home, sit with it, eat with it, let it sing you to sleep. What does that tell you about who you are?“

Damn.
