Gangotri Glacier is located in Uttarkashi District, Uttarakhand, India in a region bordering Tibet. This glacier, one of the primary sources of the Ganges, is one of the largest in the Himalayas with an estimated volume of over 27 cubic kilometers.

Gangotri is one of the Himalayan Char Dhams of India located at a distance of 19 km from Gaumukh - the actual source of river Ganga. The temple of Ganga Devi here draws lakhs of pilgrims each year and is open between the Akshaya Tritiya tithi that comes in April/May and Diwali in October every year.

Many years ago I lived for a while in an ashram north of Hardwar. One day a swami explained to me the meaning of a huge mural of the descent of the Ganga.

Gomukh (also called 'Gaumukh' or the 'Mouth of a Cow') is the terminal point or pout of Gangotri Glacier which is the source of river Bhagirathi, whose combined flow with Alaknanda river at Devprayag forms the river Ganga during her later course.
