The Grayling is one of those species that is on my list of fish that I would like to catch before I take a dirt nap. Pretty straight forward with this one. Quick Sharpie outline then went at it with watercolor washes and gouache details.

Grayling -thymallus

One of the most beautiful freshwater fishes of Alaska. Its most striking physical features are the large, sail-like dorsal (back) fin and colorful body markings. Coloration can vary from stream to stream. Their dorsal fins are typically fringed in red and dotted with large iridescent red, aqua, or purple spots and markings. These colorful markings are most dramatic on large grayling.

The noble Arctic grayling has to tolerate the close presence of some Longnose suckers. But not all grayling avoid suckers. Four years ago, I photographed a large male grayling displaying pre-spawning behavior to a male Longnose sucker. I'm dead serious.
