The Hasmonean Dynasty (Hebrew: חַשְׁמוֹנַּאִים) was a Jewish ruling dynasty of Judea and surrounding regions during classical antiquity. The dynasty was established under the leadership of Simon Thassi, two decades after his brother Judas Maccabeus defeated the Seleucid army during the Maccabean Revolt. The Jewish commanders (in Hebrew: סרן, Seren) of the Hasmonean Dynasty Army were elite nobles or members of the Royal Family, or veterans and ordinary soldiers who received the honor through their service or for having accomplished a great feat in battle. Its breastplate was composed of scales and a steel breastplate, a bronze helmet adorned with plumes and antelope horns. Commanders responded both to the Warlord (in Hebrew: אלוף, Aluf) and to the Hasmonean King-High Priest.

The Hasmonean army had 5,000 cataphracts, trained by the Seleucid cataphracts captured after the conquests of John Hyrcanus I.
