In the new HBO series The Gilded Age, one of the real-life events that took place in New York City and is recreated in the show is the display of the Statue of Liberty‘s torch and hand in Madison Square Park. She met and became secretly engaged to William Henry "Bill" Vanderbilt while he was a student at Yale, In 1892, Bill died of typhoid fever. But the events that would shatter the Vanderbilts began on the night of Gertrude Vanderbilt's coming out party in 1895. There 22-year-old Cornelius met Grace Wilson, She was his first love.
