Moses strikes the rock

The Israelites again complain that there is no water. What makes God angry, not at the people, but at Moses and Aaron?

Exodus 17:5-6 Moses obeys God and strikes the rock to provide water for the thirsting Israelites. Numbers 20 Moses disobeys God by striking the rock instead of speaking to it to bring forth water again for the Israelites at a different time. As a result of Moses' disobedience, he was not allowed to enter the promised land. Both times, history shows how when we take our eyes off God and what our journey is about, we do not enjoy the blessings God has for us while still here on this Earth.

Catholic Teachings: This is a greatly exaggerated picture of Moses striking the rock in the desert. While their time wandering in the desert, the Israelites complained a lot. God gave them water through having Moses strike a rock. This is a symbol of how God gives us our needs like water.
