The Gastrocnemius Muscle is the most superficial muscle in the posterior compartment and forms the proximal, most prominent part of the calf. The superficial group of calf muscles (muscles forming prominence of “calf” of posterior leg) includes the gastrocnemius, soleus, and plantaris.
