The practice of retaining the breath comes a little later into the pranayama practice but is the most important one. It has a lot of effects on the physical body but more effects on the mind. The mind starts becoming more and more quiet.  When you try to inhale and then retain the breath, there is more calmness built in the body and mind whereas when you exhale and retain the breath, it creates more heat and also makes the mind more active.
