Sara Tracy, Gardener | On A Garden Kick on Instagram: "A real space saver in the garden! 🙌 Wearing my sleeves from @farmersdefense helped keep my arms protected while setting up this zucchini plant to grow vertically. 🤗 Zucchini plants can make your arms itchy and their spikes can scratch so before doing this I’d definitely recommend grabbing a pair of these sleeves. 🫶🏼 There are lots of benefits to growing zucchini vertically—it saves space, creates better airflow, makes pest checks easier, and allows for easier harvesting. I also think it looks really cool. 😆 You don’t need a lot to do this—I’m using a wooden tomato stake and stretchy garden ties to secure the plant to the stake. Melissa | Regenerative Organic Garden & Farm on Instagram: "Here’s why I make sure to grow our zucchini vertically on our 1/10th acre urban homestead. #1 Helps Prevent Powdery Mildew ✨ Keeping branches off the ground helps to improve airflow around the plant. #2 Easier Access for Pollinators ✨ As flowers are set up vertically, there is easier access for pollinators to visit. #3 They are easier to prune ✨ As zucchini grow and set fruit, we should prune the leaves above the fruit we harvested up to the next fruit. #4 Takes up much less space ✨ Zucchini tend to sprawl out in our gardens. By growing them vertically, we provide space for shade tolerant companion plants. Highly recommend this method of growing for zucchini (and all summer squash, really!). A few years back for my birthday, my hubby made me a small raised rock garden in our little back yard. The next year, he added a second one along our fence line. We have loved experimenting and trying to grow things in our "small but mighty" garden. We love pretending we are farmers, or better yet, the Ingalls. One thing that grows for us really well... I'm talking maybe a bit too well, is…
