Altocumulus clouds

The types of clouds made of ice crystals often arranged in rows that live at high altitudes are called Cirrocumulus clouds which are small. Compared to altocumulus and stratocumulus, Cirrocimulus are much smaller, and the individual cloud mounds are called “cloudlets.” These clouds are relatively short-lived; they do not produce rain and are rare.

A patch, sheet or layer of Altocumulus where the spaces between the elements allow the Sun, the Moon, the blue of the sky or higher clouds to be seen. This variety often occurs in the species stratiformis.

This picture was taken April 28 2021 on UND campus. It shows altocumulus clouds, which are formed when moisture is forced upward due to rising motion. Colder air in the upper-levels cause the water droplets to condense, which then makes alto-cumulus clouds.
