GREAT EXPECTATIONS 1946 MARTITA HUNT as MISS HAVISHAM & Valerie Hobson as Estella. Photo (DETAIL) by Cecil Beaton. While dressing for her wedding, a letter from her fiancee arrived stating she'd been left at the altar & defrauded. Heartbroken & humiliated, from then on, time stood still. She never removed her wedding dress, & left the cake to rot. She became a recluse & had all the clocks stopped at 20 to 9, the time she had received the letter. Vogue in the Fourties (minkshmink) Great Expectations Estella, Miss Haversham, Estella Havisham, Victorian Bonnet, Role Call, David Lean, Miss Havisham, Halloween Ball, Cecil Beaton

The light touching of Estella's hand on my shoulder signifies a reluctant, strained bond that could slip into more or disappear entirely. A definition of our entire relationship. I hope it turns into something more. "Love her, love her, love her! If she favours you, love her. If she wounds you, love her. If she tears your heart to pieces—and as it gets older and stronger, it will tear deeper—love her, love her, love her!" (Dickens 29) Havisham is haunting me.
