Waning crescent. Low to the east before sunrise. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has been in orbit around the Moon since the summer of 2009. Its laser altimeter (LOLA) and camera (LROC) are recording the rugged, airless lunar terrain in exceptional detail, making it possible to visualize the Moon with unprecedented fidelity. A small slice of moon.

WANING CRESCENT, Dark Moon, or Balsamic Moon is waning (decreasing in light) and 75% to 0% illuminated. This phase begins the 10th or 11th day after Full Moon, and continues until New Moon. It is about 3.5 days until New Moon (at the beginning of this phase). This is the last in the 8 phases of the Lunar month.
