bake up (something)
To bake something. I decided to bake up a fresh batch of brownies for my daughter's birthday party this afternoon. Ooh, something smells good! Did you bake up some banana muffins? My mom bakes up cookies from scratch all the time, but that is not a gene I inherited.
bake up a storm
To bake a large amount (of something) with great vigor or enthusiasm. Sometimes, when I'm really stressed out, I go into the kitchen and bake up a storm to focus my attention on something positive. Ooh, something smells good! You must be baking up a storm! Ricky's birthday party is on Saturday, so I've been baking up a storm all week. I'm exhausted!
baked
1. slang Intoxicated, usually with marijuana. Man, I got totally baked last night and hardly remember a thing. She was so baked after smoking that joint that she couldn't even understand what Jake was trying to tell her. A: "You want a hit of this reefer?" B: "Nah, I haven't been baked in years. Doesn't agree with me."
2. slang Having had sun exposure, resulting in either a burn or tan. Do we have any aloe? I fell asleep on the beach and got baked, ugh. How long were you out in the sun? You're looking a little baked, man. I'm glad I got baked on my trip—I think I look better with a little color.
baked into the cake
1. Naturally inherent in or already incorporated into something. Usually said of negative traits, aspects, or behavior. Many feel that the disadvantages facing minorities in the country's economic and political systems were baked into the cake from the very outset. Unfortunately, I believe the CEO is a pathological cheater and liar. He's been on good behavior in front of the media, sure, but stuff like that is baked into the cake. I'm sorry, did she not realize that tantrums are just baked into the cake when you work in a preschool?
2. Indicating a foregone conclusion or predetermined outcome. What's sometimes difficult to remember is that the election has already been decided—the votes have been cast, so the winner is already baked into the cake. The company is certainly in a very precarious position, but it is trying to assure investors that bankruptcy is not baked into the cake. Missing the playoffs is baked into the cake, given how poorly the team has played so far this season.

To be a core aspect of one's character, motivation, or lineage; to be an intrinsic or fundamental part of one. He's always been that way, ever since he was a small boy. Helping others just seems to be baked into his DNA. This company has been drilling oil since my great-grandfather first struck crude oil back in 1902. It's baked into our DNA! I'm pretty sure the desire to teach small children is baked into someone's DNA—you can't learn something like that.

Not properly or completely thought out or planned; ill-conceived. Likened to something that has only cooked in the oven for half the time necessary. Stop coming up with these half-baked schemes! They'll never work! I could tell the project was only half-baked from the beginning, but I kept my head down and said nothing. You can't back this fool's half-baked campaign—she doesn't even have a platform!

An expression of one's excitement when they have seen someone unexpectedly. Oh my gosh, If I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake! How wonderful to see you, Ted! Maggie, are you my surprise guest? Ah! If I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake! Mom, I am so glad you're here. Goodness, if I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake!

An expression of delighted surprise at finding someone whose appearance was unanticipated. The title of a 1950 hit record by Eileen Barton, the phrase quickly caught on, and for at least a decade thereafter anyone who appeared where least expected was likely to be greeted with “If I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake.”
