from goo to you, by way of the zoo
A humorous simplification of the evolution of simple organisms to sea life, to early mammals, to primates, to humans. Typically used as a sarcastic dismissal of the theory of evolution. So, what, you just think that slime grew on a rock, and it somehow eventually turned into us? From goo to you, by way of the zoo, is that it? Oh, from goo to you, by way of the zoo—that's what you're going with? I wonder what Darwin would have to say about that. A: "I think she liked Inherit the Wind for its argument against the theory of evolution." B: "Hoo boy. From goo to you, by way of the zoo, eh?"
gewgaw
A trinket, knick-knack, or bauble, typically one that is small and ornamental. I hope Aunt Louise doesn't give me another gewgaw for my birthday—I already have a shelf full of them! I loved visiting my grandmother when I was a child and examining all the various gewgaws she'd collected around the house. I don't know why, but I'm always drawn to the random gewgaws these souvenir shops sell.
giggle water
old-fashioned slang An alcoholic drink, especially liquor or sparkling wine. A reference to the tendency of alcohol to cause giddiness or merriment in the drinker. Mother is about to tumble out of her chair! She's had more than enough giggle water tonight.
goo
Any gelatinous, slimy substance. Ugh, the goo they put on you before doing an ultrasound always feels so cold and gross. A: "I heard you scream! What's wrong?" B: "I put my hand on that tree and right into some goo! Bleh!" Um, Professor, why is goo oozing out of that test tube?
goo-brain
childish slang A stupid or foolish person. Aw, look what you did, you goo-brain! You broke it! That goo-brain couldn't get an A if his life depended on it. Don't trust that goo-brain with such an important task.
goo-goo eyes
A visibly smitten or enamored facial expression, as of one who is romantically interested in someone else. Well, if you keep staring at her with goo-goo eyes, she'll know you like her sooner than later! I can tell April is enamored of her new boyfriend—she keeps looking at him with nothing but goo-goo eyes. Of course they're beaming at each other with goo-goo eyes—they've only been dating for, like, five minutes!
