Home Kine Grindz: Nori Chicken - uses rice flour and cornstarch, not wheat flour ~ gluten-free Nori Chicken, Mochiko Chicken, Ono Kine Recipes, Hawaii Recipes, Hawaiian Desserts, Hawaiian Foods, Dried Seaweed, Local Recipes, Hawaiian Dishes

Nori Chicken is apparently the same as Mochiko Chicken added a strip of nori (dried seaweed). They added the strip of nori so that it would look like Kakimochi (or Arare, or Rice crackers), like this one. Don't they look alike?? Mochiko Chicken 1 lb chicken, cut up into small bite size pieces 1 tbs mochiko flour 1 tbs sugar 1 tbs cornstarch 1 tsp salt 2 tbs soy sauce 1 egg 2 cloves garlic green onions, diced (optional) For nori wrapped chicken: 1 sheet of nori (dried seaweed), cut into…

Kau Yuk, Home In Hawaii, Pork Dishes, Chinese Recipes, Pork Recipes, Chinese Food, Steam, Hawaii, Chicken

When I was home in Hawaii this Christmas, my popo made her famous Kau Yuk (Steamed Red Pork with Taro). Kau Yuk was one of those dishes like bittermelon that I HATED as a kid. Wouldn't touch the stuff, but now that I am adult, I guess I can appreciate the unique starchy texture of taro, richness of fermented red bean curd and of course--PORK BELLY. I stubbornly thought I could remember the recipe in my head as I watched my popo prepare the dish, but after coming back to New York... I could…

Kau yuk, red braised pork belly. Rich, luscious, fatty. Oh, man. Reminds me so much of Patti's Chinese Kitchen plate lunch specials at Ala Moana Shopping Center. Lunch here was a reward for my sister and I if we were sell-behaved while she was shopping. I can't believe they closed down after so many decades. I hear that Panda Express cut in their business. That's just disgusting. That someplace like that could put a true family Chinese food establishment out of business makes me sad. Long.Time.Ago...we used to go to Patti's Chinese Kitchen at the Ala Moana Shopping Center for a plate lunch. My beautiful wife loved their fried rice and manapua (char siu bao). My son loved the char siu with tofu and could eat a whole order by himself...now, he was 4 years old at the time. My favorite was kau yuk; red braised pork belly. Rich, luscious, fatty...mmmmmmm. Well, I just read recently in the Honolulu newspapers online that Patti's at Ala Moana is closing. Dwindling business…

We all grew up eating this dish at every occasion celebrated at a Chinese Restaurant. It is traditionally served along-side wonderful soft steamed sweet buns. As I got older, the dish was still a part of the menu, but I now realized that it was made with pork belly. Very fatty pork belly. Thus, I wanted to prepare this dish at home, still using a fatty cut of pork, but controlling it somewhat. My favorite neighborhood Chinese Restaurant sells those steamed buns, so it replicates the…
