This is such a classic drawing lesson but one that really helps students grasp the understanding of negative space I tell students to only look at the negative spaces when they’re drawing and try not to look at the visual clutter of the positive spaces. My students took photos of their arrangements within the viewfinder and could work from those as well as from life. I made the viewfinder frames using my husbands laser cutter but if you don’t have such a thing at home (lol) You can use the pre-cut mats that you find in picture frames. It doesn’t matter if everybody’s frame is a different size it just gives them a viewfinder to work with and then they can trace that onto their pape

This was a wonderful drawing lesson my second practicum student taught to a mixed class of Grade 7-9 students last month. It was well received among students and yielded a high success rate!
