In Chapter XVI Alexander investigates whether the Stoic notion of body going through body is appl... more In Chapter XVI Alexander investigates whether the Stoic notion of body going through body is applicable to the phenomenon of biological growth. If anything, growth through nutrition seems to recommend this Stoic notion. However, in Chapter XVI Alexander develops an Aristotelian explanation of growth, which is more convincing and does not rely on the Stoic notion. Since the Stoic notion of body going through body has been shown to be problematic in the earlier chapters of De mixtione, and the final chapter discards its utility even for an explanation of growth, we argue that the outcome of the treatise is that the Stoic notion should be abandoned. In this contribution we divide Alexander’s text in 9 sections and analyse it section by section, availing ourselves of other relevant texts, such as Aristotle’s De generatione et corruptione I 5, Quaestio I 5 attributed to Alexander, and his Commentary on Aristotle’s Meteorology IV. In the Appendix we discuss four points: (1) it is the nutritive capacity of the soul that is the efficient, formal and final cause of nourishment, (2) diminution in old age is due to the decreasing rate of absorption of digested nutriment, (3) for any episode of growth, some bit of matter needs to remain through it, which makes replacement of bodily ingredients a gradual process, (4) Chapter XVI is not extraneous to De mixtione or tucked at the end of it for want of a better place, as some scholars have suggested, but an integral part of the treatise at its right place.

In De anima III.2, Aristotle speaks of “perceiving that we are seeing and hearing”, which is usua... more In De anima III.2, Aristotle speaks of “perceiving that we are seeing and hearing”, which is usually interpreted as some form of reflexive awareness. This reflexive awareness has been interpreted either as a type of content which is part of every act of first-order perception (Caston), or as a type of content which is supplied by second-order perception that accompanies first-order perception (Kahn, Johansen). In this paper I argue for the latter view by emphasizing that reflexive awareness crucially involves awareness not only of the activity of the special senses, but also of their inactivity. I show why awareness of inactivity of one’s senses is of vital importance for animals and I adduce evidence that Aristotle was alert to that fact. Following what Aristotle says in De somno et vigilia 2, 455a12-22, I ascribe reflexive awareness to the common sense, and I propose that the common sense is always active in the waking state, continually registering the incoming motions from all the different sensory channels, but also registering omission of incoming motions from particular sensory channels. Thus, we perceive that we are seeing and hearing, but also that we are not seeing or hearing, when it so happens. This presents us with two different cases: that of the co-occurrence of both tokens, and that of the occurrence of a token of second-order perception without a token of first-order perception. Moreover, I show that the common sense is inactive in sleep, which causes simultaneous inactivity of the special senses too. So, in sleep we are not seeing and hearing anything, but also we do not perceive that we are not seeing and hearing. Because no monitoring takes place in sleep, we are unaware of the fact that our senses are not exercised by external objects, which is one of the conditions for being deceived by dreams, since dreamers tend to take dreams to be perceptions of real things. So, sleep gives us the case of non-occurrence of both tokens. The remaining permutation is the case of the occurrence of a token of first-order perception without a token of second-order perception, which I suggest is exemplified by excessive stimuli coming from one sense and impeding the stimuli arriving from another sense. Given all these permutations, we must conclude that it is necessary to speak about two different tokens each of a different type, rather than of one token of two different types, as Caston has argued. Moreover, it is clear that tokens of first-order perception should be assigned to the special senses in cooperation with the common sense, and tokens of second-order perception to the operation of the common sense on its own, and this all amounts to an inner sense story, such as defended by Kahn and Johansen. Although reflexive awareness of inactivity of the senses would help their interpretation, Kahn and Johansen failed to take notice of it. At the end I discuss and defuse some possible objections for the view of reflexive awareness espoused in this paper.

One of the salient features of dreams is that we are deceived by them, we take our dreams to be r... more One of the salient features of dreams is that we are deceived by them, we take our dreams to be real. Aristotle is alert to this feature and he discusses it in several passages of De insomniis. In the first part of this contribution, I examine the relevant passages and provide an interpretation of Aristotle’s explanation of the deceptive character of dreams. My interpretation has wider consequences for our understanding of Aristotle’s views on various cognitive capacities and their interaction. In the second part, I discuss the commentary on De insomniis by Michael of Ephesus. I present Michael’s interpretation of Aristotle’s take on the deceptive character of dreams, and I compare it with the interpretation I developed in the first part of this contribution.

This paper explores the conception of soul and its relation to pneuma in "De spiritu", a short an... more This paper explores the conception of soul and its relation to pneuma in "De spiritu", a short and relatively neglected treatise transmitted with the Aristotelian corpus. Following a review of all the relevant passages, it is concluded that the author was familiar with Aristotle's biological works and his conception of soul, but does not subscribe to it. It is shown that various other conceptions of soul make appearance in the treatise. It is proposed that the author aimed to make his physiological and anatomical theory-built on Aristotle's notion of pneuma-compatible with as many different conceptions of soul in circulation as possible, which he viewed as a competitive advantage of his theory.

Turbulent political situation and no continuity of organized philosophical activity on the territ... more Turbulent political situation and no continuity of organized philosophical activity on the territory of the present-day Croatia in the Renaissance period allow only for an overview of individual philosophers who originated from that territory, or conducted their philosophical activities there, between the 15th and the 17th century. A few of these thinkers were influenced by the cultures of Central Europe, but most came from the coastal area which belonged to the Italian cultural and political sphere, especially that of the Republic of Venice. Most philosophers in this entry received their education and pursued their careers abroad, in cities of Italy and other European centres. Biographies, achievements and main works of these thinkers are grouped into four topographic sections: (1) the continental area, (2) the northern coastal area, (3) central Dalmatia and (4) south Dalmatia, in particularly the Republic of Dubrovnik. Within each section, philosophers are listed in chronological order. Philosophers of wider renown are mentioned briefly, mainly to situate them in this context and to refer the reader to the corresponding biographical essays.
This short paper offers an interpretation of Socrates’ closing words in Plato’s Apology. I argue ... more This short paper offers an interpretation of Socrates’ closing words in Plato’s Apology. I argue that the closing words are directed at two particular groups of people at the trial, the three accusers and the jurymen who voted for Socrates’ death penalty. The interpretation I propose does not assume any confusing shifts in the intended recipients of Socrates’ words. Instead, it gives a natural reading of all the verbs and pronouns in the second person plural that follow the third person plural autōn at 41e1, it fixes the reference of the final ō andres accordingly and without compromising the distinction introduced by addressing only the friendly jurors with ō andres dikastai. In addition, I argue that the interpretation makes excellent sense of Plato’s text and gives it a richer meaning than what we find in the literature.
In this paper, I would like to present Aristotle's attitude to sense-perception. I will refer to ... more In this paper, I would like to present Aristotle's attitude to sense-perception. I will refer to this attitude as "perceptual optimism". Perceptual optimism is, very briefl y, the position that the senses give us full access to reality as it is. Perceptual optimism entails perceptual realism, the view that there is a reality out there which is accessible to our senses in some way or other, and the belief that our senses are veridical at least to some extent, but it is more comprehensive than that. For instance, a perceptual optimist does not admit such things as qualities which are perceptible in principle but not by us or bodies too small to be perceptible. In this paper I argue that Aristotle is a perceptual optimist, since he believes that reality, at least in the sublunary sphere, is indeed fully accessible to our senses. In the fi rst and largest part of this paper, I will show, in seven distinct theses, what Aristotle's perceptual optimism entails. In the second and shorter part, I will put Aristotle's position in a wider context of his epistemology and show why it was important for him to be a perceptual optimist.

In this paper I argue that Alexander, while being generally faithful to Aristotle’s regarding the... more In this paper I argue that Alexander, while being generally faithful to Aristotle’s regarding the common sense, made four lasting contributions to this topic. First, he restricted the term ‘common sense’ to the unified perceptual power of the soul which excludes phantasia. This blazed the trail for later theories of the internal senses in which the common sense figures as a non-rational cognitive capacity distinct from phantasia, memory, and whatever further capacity various Arabic and Latin philosophers may have postulated. Second, Alexander’s claim that we perceive ourselves seeing and hearing by means of the common sense, rather than by the special senses, influenced (correctly, in my opinion) later readings of Aristotle’s passages dealing with awareness of perception, giving preference to Aristotle’s account in De somno 2 over his more widely read account in De anima III.2, 425b12-25. Third, his statement that the common sensibles are perceived by the common sense, rather than by the special senses, made its mark (incorrectly, in my opinion) on later readings of Aristotle’s passages dealing with the common sensibles, most notably of De anima III.1, 425a14-425b11. Fourth, Alexander’s analogy of the common sense with the centre of a circle in which different radii meet, though surely inspired by Aristotle’s analogy of a point bisecting a line in De anima III.2, 427a9-14, was a brilliant innovation that intuitively captured the Peripatetic cardiocentric model, leaving a deep impression on later students of Aristotle.
The concept of species is one of the core concepts in biology and one of the cornerstones of evol... more The concept of species is one of the core concepts in biology and one of the cornerstones of evolutionary biology, yet it is rife with conceptual problems. Philosophers of biology have been discussing the concept of species for decades, and in doing so they sometimes appeal to the views of biologists. However, their statements as to what biologists think are seldom supported by empirical data. In order to investigate what biologists actually think about the key issues related to the problem of species, we have conducted a survey on the sample of 193 biologists from the population of biologists from over 150 biology departments at universities in the US and the EU. This article presents and discusses the results of the survey. Some results confirm and others falsify the reiterated statements of philosophers of biology as to what biologists think, but all results we obtained should be informative and relevant for future discussions of the problem of species.

De mundo is a protreptic to philosophy in the form of a letter to Alexander the Great and is trad... more De mundo is a protreptic to philosophy in the form of a letter to Alexander the Great and is traditionally ascribed to Aristotle. It offers a unique view of the cosmos, God and their relationship, which was inspired by Aristotle but written by a later author. The author provides an outline of cosmology, geography and meteorology, only to argue that a full understanding of the cosmos cannot be achieved without a proper grasp of God as its ultimate cause. To ensure such a grasp, the author provides a series of twelve carefully chosen interlocking analogies, building a complex picture in the reader's mind. The work develops a distinctly Aristotelian picture of God and the cosmos while paying tribute to pre-Aristotelian philosophers and avoiding open criticism of rival schools of philosophy. De mundo exercised considerable influence in late antiquity and then in the Renaissance and Early Modern times.

The contributors analyze Aristotle's arguments and present their cases in ways that invite contemporary philosophers of mind to consider the potentials-and pitfalls-of an Aristotelian philosophy of mind. New York, NY i Dordrecht: Springer, 2011, xiii + 366 str. «Od sveučilištâ se traži da preuzmu sve važniju ulogu u gospodarskom i društvenom razvitku. Vlasti sveučilištima stavljaju u zadaću da obrazuju sve različitije dobne skupine kao i da razvijaju i prenose najnovije tehnologije u gospodarstvo. Gospodarstvo pak sve manje traži opće inženjersko obrazovanje i od sveučilišta traži da daju nova i specijalizirana znanja kao i da provode istraživanja za posebne potrebe gospodarstva. Studenti obrazovanje shvaćaju više kao investiciju nego osobnu potrebu i zahtijevaju obrazovanje koje je relevantno za zapošljavanje. Nadalje, civilno društvo od sveučilišta često očekuje smjernice za rješavanje svih vrsta poteškoća koje zahvaćaju društvo, od bolesti do ljudskih sukoba. Kako sveučilišta mogu zadovoljiti takvu navalu ponekad sukobljenih očekivanja?» (str. 348). Ovo je pitanje koje sažima izazov s kojim se danas suočavaju sveučilišta diljem svijeta i kojemu je posvećena ova knjiga. Međutim, najprije se valja zapitati odakle taj izazov. Zašto je on globalan? I zašto je tako urgentan? Prva, univerzalna i temeljna misija sveučilišta jest poučavanje, točniječuvanje, produbljivanje, stvaranje te prijenos znanja i vještina. Druga misija, koju je sveučilište kao institucija postupno preuzelo, ponajviše uspjehom humboldtovskog modela sveučilišta, jest istraživanje. Dakako, nisu sva sveučilišta istraživačka. Tekst Tomislava Bracanoviaea "Norme i èinjenice u hrvatskoj filozofskoj periodici", objavljen u p... more Tekst Tomislava Bracanoviaea "Norme i èinjenice u hrvatskoj filozofskoj periodici", objavljen u prošlom broju (Prolegomena 4 (1/2005), str. 157-170), otvorio je neka va®na pitanja o financiranju i kvaliteti filozofskih èasopisa u Hrvatskoj. Izneseni argumenti trebali bi ozbiljno zabrinuti pojedine urednike, ureðivaèke odbore, ali i slu®benike u Ministarstvu znanosti, obrazovanja i športa koji odluèuju o raspodjeli sredstava iz dr®avnog proraèuna. U ovome tekstu htio bih otvoriti još neka pitanja u vezi s filozofskim èasopisima u nas koja nisu bila dotaknuta u Bracanoviaeevom tekstu. Naime, u Narodnim novinama br. 84, od 11. srpnja 2005. godine, objavljen je novi Pravilnik o uvjetima za izbor u znanstvena zvanja. Posljednji, 6. dio Pravilnika odnosi se na humanistièke znanosti. U njemu je sadr®ano više problematiènih odredbi, no ovdje bih upozorio na tri koje se izravno tièu filozofskih èasopisa.
Nikola Vitov Gučetić (1549.–1610.) bio je istaknuta osoba političkog i intelektualnog života Dubr... more Nikola Vitov Gučetić (1549.–1610.) bio je istaknuta osoba političkog i intelektualnog života Dubrovnika u razdoblju kasne renesanse. Obnašao je visoke državne dužnosti od kojih se odmarao u svom ljetnikovcu u Trstenom pišući platonovske dijaloge, aristotelovske rasprave i teološke komentare. Upravo je u uglednoj izdavačkoj kući Brill iz Leidena objavljeno kritičko izdanje Gučetićeva komentara uz prvu knjigu Aristotelove Retorike, najutjecajnijeg antičkog priručnika govorništva. Iz tog teksta možemo vidjeti kako je Gučetić čitao i primjenjivao taj priručnik, što je mislio o sebi i svojim suvremenicima, kako je pokušavao pomiriti Aristotelove nazore s kršćanskima, čemu se nadao i što je od retorike očekivao. Gučetićevi komentari uz Aristotelovu Retoriku otkrivaju i njegov odnos prema suvremenoj literaturi, starim i novim intelektualnim autoritetima, grčkom jeziku, a i vlastitim i tuđim knjigama, od kojih se neke i danas mogu konzultirati u Znanstvenoj knjižnici u Dubrovniku.

Although reflexive awareness of inactivity of the senses would help their interpretation, Kahn and Johansen failed to take notice of it. At the end I discuss and defuse some possible objections for the view of reflexive awareness espoused in this paper.
