Fatehpur Sikri was built between 1571 and 1585 and encompassed a grand palace, courtyards, gardens, gazebos, ceremonial gates, an artificial lake, and a large mosque, with most of the buildings being constructed out of local red sandstone. The city’s name, “Fatehpur,” meaning “City of Victory,” commemorates Akbar’s triumphant Gujarat campaign in 1573.
