Heart art lesson

Need a fast and fun lesson for Valentine's Day (or anytime, really) inspired by the artist Jen Stark? I created this one for my students and they started it last week. Some are working BIG on 12" X 18" paper while others are using it as an early finisher project and worked on paper half the size. Create 3 boxes with 4 inch tops and 4 inch bottoms. And yes I had to teach 1st graders how to use the ruler! Then use the ruler to create horizontal and vertical lines inside your boxes. Draw a heart inside each of the 3 boxes. Color in the hearts first and then the backgrounds using a repeating checker board patten. Here's a wonderfully easy abstract art project for kids that almost guarantees artistic success!

I created a slideshow of 5 artists that use hearts in their artwork! My plan is to show my distance learners this slideshow which features a range of heart artworks and then have them create their own heart-inspired artwork using their own choice of media and creativity.
