Arvin Gouw is the founding CEO of Bacchus Therapeutics, developing small molecule inhibitors of cancer metabolic pathways. His work is under the entrepreneurship program of SPARK at Stanford. Prior to Stanford and Harvard, Arvin did his fellowship on science and religion at Princeton. Arvin received his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, master's degrees in philosophy from University of Pennsylvania, in theology from SMSU Ecumenical Institute of Theology, and in neuroscience from UC Berkeley.

There are scientific risks with CRISPR gene editing, but risk assessment is not impossible and is currently in progress. Space travel presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities for CRISPR gene editing. Biomedically, space travel is a major health hazard for astronauts. Research on the genetic and molecular mechanisms behind these biomedical challenges presents opportunities for CRISPR to serve as a biomedical intervention for astronauts. This article gives several examples where such mechanisms have been reported. However, the guidelines regarding CRISPR applications are still very generic and difficult to implement in specific cases. The focus of this paper is on the therapy/enhancement distinction, which many guidelines mention, to help us discern when CRISPR applications are justifiable. I propose a reworking of the definition of normal in order to be able to distinguish therapy from enhancement, where the former is deemed more appropriate for CRISPR applications than the latter. Space travel is a unique and interesting scenario to test the applications of the therapy/enhancement distinction as guidelines for CRISPR gene editing.

The Institute on Religion in the Age of Science (IRAS) asked Ted Peters, an eminent theologian an... more The Institute on Religion in the Age of Science (IRAS) asked Ted Peters, an eminent theologian and bioethicist who was at the forefront of the cloning and stem cell debates in the past few decades, and myself, a molecular biologist, to invite scholars from various fields to brainstorm the religious and ethical implications of the CRISPR revolution. We invited keynote speakers, whose talks will be covered here, as well as other speakers and poster presentations. The conference also hosted question and answer sessions, chaplain sessions, and discussions throughout the week at the beautiful Star Island in the summer of 2019. The purpose of this paper is to highlight and sample the discussions and presentations from that conference. I will organize them into three broad topics: CRISPR in science, ethics, and religion. For readers unfamiliar with CRISPR technology, this overview can also serve as an introduction to the field, and a stepping stone for future ideas for CRISPR discussions.
