Unfortunately, the wheat plant is a target of several species of the genus Fusarium. This genus causes two serious diseases: fusarium crown rot (FCR) and fusarium head blight (FHB). The search for new indigenous strains of Trichoderma with a high potential for biocontrol against these two diseases was the purpose of this study. Results Biocontrol potential of 15 isolates of Trichoderma (T1 to T15), isolated from different rhizosphere soils and Algerian ecosystems, was evaluated against 4 strains of Fusarium culmorum (FC11, FC2, FC4, and FC20); the main causative agent of FCR and FHB. The efficacy of biological control by Trichoderma spp., evaluated by in vitro tests (direct and indirect confrontation), was confirmed by in vivo bioassays. The in vitro results showed a significant inhibition of mycelial growth of F. culmorum species than the control. The highest percentages of inhibition w...

The objectives of this study are (i) to apply a gene-based characterization of 118 barley doubled haploid recombinants for vernalization, photoperiod, and earliness per se; (ii) use such information to quantify the optimal combination of genotype/sowing date that escapes extreme weather events; and (iii) how water and nitrogen management impact on grain yield. The doubled haploid barley genotypes with different allelic combinations for vernalization, photoperiod, and earliness per se were grown in eight locations across the Mediterranean basin. This information was linked with the crop growth model parameters. The photoperiod and earliness per se allel...

The results indicated that yield varied widely and was significantly affected by year, location, year x location, genotype x location and genotype x location x year interactions, which accounted for 0.8, 63.1, 21.0, 5.8, and 3.40% of the treatment sum square, respectively. The joint regression and the AMMI analyses explained 30.08% and 83.35% of the sum square of the interaction, respectively. The results indicated that tested locations exhibited high interaction and could be grouped into two recommendation domains: Khroub vsTiaret, Setif and Guelma. Genotypes Azeghar-1/3/Mrf-2/Bcr/Gro-1ICD00-0904-H-9AP-AP-1AP-TR, Miki-3ICD94-0994-C-10AP-0AP-2AP-0AP-9AP-0TR and Azeghar-1/Blm//Mrf-2 ICD00-0818-C-18AP-AP-9AP-TRexhibited high yield main effect, and large adaptability to all locations, whi...

Cereal production is on the other hand low and fluctuating, so are yields. Even if wheat production gaps can be met, the quality of the product is still low. The study aimed the analysis of different wheat quality parameters of durum wheat to check and verify if there is a temporal variation in each season. The twenty one durum wheat genotypes arising from divers origin were layed out in a randomized block design with 4 replications during 2 successive years (2003/2004 and 2004/2005) at Elkhroub experimental station in the eastern high plains of Algeria. Data was analysed using different statistical tools (t student test, ANOVA, MANOVA, Principal component and cluster analysis. The anova confirmed by the manova tests indicated the existence of highly significant differences among all quality traits for all genotypes in each season and for...

The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design at two locations (ITGC-AES of Setif and Khroub, Algeria) considered during two successive winter seasons of 2015/16 and 2016/17. Results indicated that, averaged across seasons and locations, modern varieties outperformed older varieties in terms of grain yield, spike number, spike weight, number of kernels per square meter, harvest index, spike fertility and stay green. Old varieties surpassed the modern ones in terms of straw yield, lateness, tallness and flag leaf area. Whereas, modern varieties were stress tolerant and more responsive to improved growth conditions, showing agronomic stability type. Old varieties were characterized by a minimal responsiveness to improved environmental conditions, stress tolerance, and biological stability type. Pearson's correlation coefficients and path analyses indicate that, in both sources of germoplasm, the strong influence of biomass, spike number, spike fertility and harvest index on grain yield. Physiological traits had negligible direct effects and small indirect effects via biomass, spike number and harvest index. Lastly, principal component analysis revealed that old varieties represent an important gene pool for important traits among which plant height and straw yield. Furthermore, the differences between both sources of germoplasm can be usefully used in breeding program (Gene-bank) to enhance yield potential, stability and resilience to changing climate of the future varieties.

They play an important role in dough properties and in bread making quality in various wheat varieties. In the present study, the different alleles encoded at the 5 glutenin loci were identified from a set of 38 tetraploid wheat germplasm obtained from interspecific crosses between durum wheats (Triticum turgidum L. ssp. durum (Desf.) Husn.) and their relatives (T. dicoccum Schübl. and T. polonicum L.) using SDS-PAGE. At Glu-A1 and Glu-B1, encoding high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS), 2 and 4 alleles were observed, respectively. Low molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GS) displayed similar polymorphism, as 3, 5 and 3 alleles were identified at loci Glu-A3, Glu-B3 and Glu-B2, respectively. One new allele was detected at Glu-B3 locus and appeared in nine accessions obtained from five crosses. This allele codes for five subunits (2 + 8 + 9 + 13 + 18), encoded by the Glu-B3b without subunit 16 plus subunits 2 and 18. A total of 38 patterns resulted from the genetic combination of the alleles encoding at the five glutenin loci. This led to a significantly higher Nei coefficient of genetic variation in Glu-1, . The germplasm analyzed exhibited allelic variation in HMW and LMW glutenin subunit composition and the variation differed from that of tetraploid wheats of other countries. The presence of high quality alleles in glutenin loci have led the accessions to be considered as an asset in breeding programs aimed for wheat quality.

A, B, C, and D scaling and Chi-square (χ2) tests revealed the inadequacy of the simple additive-dominance model. This result suggests the presence of digenic epistasis for most studied traits; the duplicate epistasis was present for relative water content, above-ground biomass, and grain yield; and complementary epistasis was observed for chlorophyll content. Significant genotypic correlation coefficients appeared among grain yield, relative water content, and above-ground biomass. This suggests useful indirect selection criteria to improve simultaneously these traits, which showed significant heritability. It can be concluded that the traits investigated show a complex genetic behavior, which implies tha...

Developing varieties intended for arid and semi-arid zones need to select for these traits. Understanding the genetic control of a given trait helps breeder to handle the segregating populations under study in a more efficient and consistent manner by choosing the best breeding method available to realize significant genetic advance. For this purpose, six generations: parents, F1, F2, BC1, BC2, derived from MBB x ‘Gaviota’ durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) cross were grown to investigate the nature of gene action involved in the inheritance pattern of the three traits. The results indicated that the six-parameter model fitted the best the data related to the variability present in the generation means of the studied traits. Generation mean analysis indicated that non-allelic interactions were important factors controlling the expression of these characte...

The present investigation was undertaken to study the inheritance pattern and genetic analysis of... more The present investigation was undertaken to study the inheritance pattern and genetic analysis of some indicators of grain yield in F 1 and F 2 populations of two bread wheat crosses. The results reflected a satisfactory range of variability within and among the studied generations. Significant positive selection differentials were observed for all characters. High heritability estimates, coupled with high to moderate expected response to selection, were observed in most traits. High predicted genetic gain was observed for grain yield and above ground biomass. The estimated number of genes, involved in the genetic control of these characteristics, varied between 2 to 5, showing partial to over-dominance, suggesting that the selection must therefore be delayed until the F 4 or F 5 generation. Significant heterotic values in positive direction were found for all characters except thousand-kernel weight in both crosses and number of grains per spike in Acsad 899 × Mahon-Demias cross. Inbreeding depression was observed in both crosses for the number of spikes, above-ground biomass and grain yield. The obtained results indicated that the studied crosses would be of interest in the breeding program. It was suggested that the selection for all characters, except for thousand-kernel weight, should be effective in early segregating generations due to additive gene effects.

The 20 F1’s and their parents were evaluated in randomized complete block design with three replications at the Field Crop Institute-Agricultural Experimental Station of Setif (Algeria) during the 2011/2012 cropping season. The results showed that the components associated with additive effects were more relevant than those associated with the dominance effects for these traits. Based on the KD/KR ratio, the dominant alleles are present in greater frequency in the first group of parents, while the opposite is true for the second group. Values of the gene proportion with positive and negative effects in the parents revealed an unequal distribution of dominant genes in the parents for almost all the traits except for number of grain per spike in the second group which showed an equal distribution.
