The object and innovation of the present Doctoral Thesis is the development of a reliable and eas... more The object and innovation of the present Doctoral Thesis is the development of a reliable and easy-to-use methodology for the characterization of paper substrates and, particularly, for the non-invasive control of the authenticity of watercolour paintings, based on their paper substrate, with application to aquarelles by Greek painters of the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The theoretical part of the Thesis focuses on the particular characteristics of the art papers, and especially those of watercolours. In addition, we carry out a listing of the watercolour paper types available in the past within European countries, as well as of the presently commercially available ones. Furthermore, this part contains a literature review on historical data of relevant paper making and paper usages. The initial results of a research project on the investigation of problems presented by a collect... more The initial results of a research project on the investigation of problems presented by a collection of oil paintings on paper supports are presented. The project focuses on the effect of the oil medium on the deterioration of cellulose, on the materials and techniques used by the artists and on comprehension of the resulting problems. Non destructive methodology was used to record the behaviour of the materials when examined in several regions of the electromagnetic spectrum which gives an indication of areas of damage. . Various analytical techniques were applied to investigate the painting materials and supports in original works of art. The increase in rate of the oxidation of cellulose in paper, when the paper is coated in oil, is investigated by analyzing volatile organic compounds emitted during ageing tests. The assessment of the results obtained will act as a pilot for a more extensive program of research, the ultimate aim of which is the formulation of a recommended method...

Abstract The construction and examination of test panels is an ad hoc procedure, necessary for ev... more Abstract The construction and examination of test panels is an ad hoc procedure, necessary for every spectral imaging study of paintings. Despite the common features, almost every scientific team follows a different way of construction. Furthermore, many of these approaches are not adequately documented in the relevant papers. Failure to use common language and practice leads to confusion about properties of materials and paint layers that have been overall examined by the scientists, as well as the validity of the results and their exploitation in several conservation applications. The present theoretical approach points out the need for common protocols for the construction of test panels and draws general principles as a flow chart on which they should be based.

In particular, spectral cubes or monochromatic images in the visible and near infrared spectrum are captured, using either reflected or transmitted light, in normal or tangent illumination conditions for micro and macro scale characteristics evaluation. Various parameters that influence the choice of the appropriate experimental setup are discussed, such as the type of the surface and substrate, the optical characteristics of the surface and the paint layers structure of the artwork. In addition, the morphology and the non-controlled environmental conditions are examined, especially when studying outdoor surfaces.
