One is the classic remit of the international relations between states. The second is the mainstream remit of political analysis, the national dialogue – sometimes open, often constrained – between the state and its inhabitants. In addition, the third is the cross-border space between the state and its citizens who – as diaspora, exiles, and migrants – live in other countries. Too often, each is analysed in isolation, part of the intellectually unedifying division of academic work. In this chapter, we explore where contemporary Iranian politics exists and how it is played out through each of these political geographies.

We problematize the very idea and discourse of integration that frames much debate in the UK and elsewhere for presupposing an ethnicised Other who must be rendered 'unproblematic' in economic, social and cultural terms. This problematic space is often filled with 'Muslims', seen either as working-class immigrants undermining the host white working-class or as cultural minorities making unreasonable demands. This language both hails Iranians and renders them invisible, since they do not fit into either position. Exploring the ways in which Iranians themselves describe their experiences, we raise analytic concerns regarding the contemporary diasporic experience. We note that Iranian's educational and cultural capital does not exempt them from the politics of integration or make social mobility easie...
