The aim of the secondary voltage control is to minimize voltage deviations at load buses so as to improve the system voltage security. This paper addresses a new approach to show the improvement of system stability with the secondary voltage control. Two case studies based respectively on the 10-bus system and the New England 39-bus system are provided.
The photophysical behaviour of N-(2-hydroxy benzylidene) aniline or most commonly known as salicy... more The photophysical behaviour of N-(2-hydroxy benzylidene) aniline or most commonly known as salicylideneaniline (SA) has been investigated using the ab initio and DFT levels of theory. The quantum chemical calculations show that the optimized non planar enol (C 1 ) form of the SA molecule is the most stable conformer in the ground state and is marked by the twisting of the phenolic and anilino rings of the molecule. The geometry optimizations and the subsequent frequency calculations of the excited singlet electronic states of the various tautomeric forms of SA molecule were performed with the CIS level of theory. A detail theoretical investigation on the relaxation dynamics of the SA molecule has been presented. Possible explanation on the excitation wavelength dependence of the photochromic yield of the molecule is also reported.

ABSTRACT Although there are some exceptions, a distribution systems course is not part of a typic... more ABSTRACT Although there are some exceptions, a distribution systems course is not part of a typical undergraduate curriculum. The course is usually taught at the graduate level. Teaching a distribution systems course requires the student to have a background in balanced three-phase power system modeling such as that obtained from a first power systems analysis course. The requirement to add breadth to an undergraduate curriculum often precludes the notion of depth in any one area unless a student takes the depth courses as technical or free electives. An argument could be made that a distribution systems course does not contain much power engineering fundamentals beyond what is covered in a first power systems course. Conversely, much of the interesting concepts including load characteristics, transformer configurations, unbalanced system modeling, power quality modeling, radial system protection coordination, etc., occur at the distribution level. In addition, much of the smart grid innovations will occur at this level. This paper discusses some of the merits and demerits of developing and teaching a distribution systems course at the undergraduate level and also focuses on the difficulties of developing the contents of such a course. Index Terms—Smart grid, microgrid, power engineering education, power quality, system reliability.

T cell dysfunction is crucial to the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however,... more T cell dysfunction is crucial to the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however, the molecular mechanisms involved in the deficient expression of the T cell receptor-associated CD3 chain in SLE are not clear. SLE T cells express abnormally increased levels of an alternatively spliced isoform of CD3 that lacks a 562-bp region in its 3-untranslated region (UTR). We showed previously that two adenosine/uridine-rich elements (ARE) in this splice-deleted region of CD3 transcript are critical for the mRNA stability and protein expression of CD3. In this study we show for the first time that the mRNA-stabilizing protein HuR binds to these two ARE bearing regions of CD3 3-UTR. Knockdown of HuR resulted in decreased expression of the CD3 chain, whereas overexpression led to the increase of CD3 chain levels. Additionally, overexpression of HuR in human T cells resulted in increased mRNA stability of CD3. Our results identify the 3-UTR of CD3 as a novel target for the mRNA-stabilizing protein HuR. The purpose of this study was to compare patient preference, ease of use, and correctness of use ... more The purpose of this study was to compare patient preference, ease of use, and correctness of use of fluticasone propionate (FP) inhalation powder administered via the Diskus TM and FP inhalation aerosol administered via MDI. In 154 adult patients with asthma and a limited history of MDI use, the Diskus TM and the MDI were compared in a randomized, open-label, 3 week cross-over study. Following the use of both devices, more patients perceived the Diskus TM easier to use (59%) and preferred it overall (60%) compared with the MDI (P<0.016). Ninety-eight percent of the patients were able to correctly perform all the maneuvers necessary to use the MDI vs. 91% for the Diskus TM following a single demonstration and/or reading the instructions. Compliance was significantly better for the Diskus TM with 93.2% of patients using the Diskus TM as directed compared to 80.7% for the MDI (P=0.021) If given the choice 59% of patients indicated that they would most likely request the Diskus TM from their physician (p=0.025). Conclusion: Despite the fact all patients had prior, albeit minimal, experience using an MDI, the Diskus TM was used correctly by nearly all patients (91%) following minimal instructions. Compliance rates were significantly higher with the Diskus TM compared to the MDI. In addition, most patients indicated they would likely request the Diskus TM from their physicians indicating a high level of acceptance of the Diskus TM in this patient population.
A time splitting least-squares finite element method (LSFBM) and the 'stiff ODES' solver LSODE ar... more A time splitting least-squares finite element method (LSFBM) and the 'stiff ODES' solver LSODE are used to simulate the advective transport of reactive species. Specifically, the rotating cone problem with chemical reactions serves as a model to test the algorithm. A non-linear filter is used to suppress spurious oscillations at each advective time step. All simulations are carried out by using linear and quadratic elements on two mesh systems. Results from the coarse mesh system suggest that the use of robust numerical methods alone will not be able to provide accurate results and point to the need of grid refinement. The grid refinement tests are evaluated by pollutant peak concentrations, pollutant concentration distributions, average relative errors, species mass conservation and distribution ratios and CPU times. Results from the fine mesh system are satisfactory and imply that accurate simulations of the transport of reactive species require adequate grid resolution and robust numerical methods for each individual advective and reactive step. 0

Electrical engineering curriculums have a large number of required courses and many subareas for students to study. By introducing power concepts in a variety of courses, students may be motivated to take additional courses in the power area and are better prepared for the diverse background which will be required of them as practicing power engineers. The important interrelationships between subareas of electrical engineering are better understood by students when cross discipline applications are discussed. This paper describes the introduction of power concepts and applications in courses such as linear systems, digital systems, microprocessors, digital signal processing, electronic system design, and electrical materials.

A high surface area titania-zirconia mixed oxide support was prepared by the technique of precipi... more A high surface area titania-zirconia mixed oxide support was prepared by the technique of precipitation from homogeneous solutions. Vanadia (12 wt %) was impregnated on TiO 2 -ZrO 2 support by using an oxalic acid solution of NH 4 VO 3 . The TiO 2 -ZrO 2 binary oxide support and the V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 -ZrO 2 catalyst were then subjected to thermal treatments from 500 to 800°C. The influence of thermal treatments on the dispersion and stability of the catalyst was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT infrared (FTIR), UV-vis absorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The characterization results suggest that the TiO 2 -ZrO 2 binary oxide support is thermally quite stable up to 800°C. Calcination of the coprecipitated titanium-zirconium hydroxides at 500°C result in the formation of an amorphous phase, and further heating at 600°C converts this amorphous phase into a crystalline ZrTiO 4 compound. Impregnation of V 2 O 5 and heating of the V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 -ZrO 2 catalyst beyond 600°C results in the formation of ZrV 2 O 7 , with the simultaneous presence of the TiO 2 rutile phase. However, the vanadia is in a highly dispersed state on the TiO 2 -ZrO 2 mixed oxide support when calcined at less than 600°C.

For obese or muscular built patients these tests are cumbersome and often unsuitable. We describe for the first time a new method, the 'Delhi active test', by which a torn ACL can be detected irrespective of the size or build of the patient. The results of this test are reproducible and the diagnostic accuracy is comparable with other tests. We suggest that the 'Delhi active test' be used as one of the routine clinical methods to detect the torn ACL. ᮊ
The results, presented here discusses the Macro-Defect-Free (MDF) cements prepared from the blend... more The results, presented here discusses the Macro-Defect-Free (MDF) cements prepared from the blends of sulfoaluminate ferrite belite (SAFB) clinkers, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Al 2 O 3 and poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA), styrene/acrylonitrile co-polymer (SACP) or sodium polyphosphate (poly-P). Though MDF cements have several attractive properties, their utilization has been limited due to the insufficient moisture resistance. It is a very challenging task for scientists and technologist to improve the moisture resistance of MDF cements. Therefore, the new MDF cements were subjected to various moist atmospheres to investigate their moisture resistance. The most significance of this work is the improvement of moisture resistance of the studied MDF cements. The aim of this work was to understand the effects of polymers, Al 2 O 3 , OPC and SAFB clinkers in the raw mix and delayed drying on MDF cements and also on their subsequent moisture resistance and thermal stability as well as to discover the new properties of these materials. Their chemical, thermal and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis was also carried out before and after exposure to moisture. PBA was found to be the most suitable polymer for MDF cement synthesis, since the samples containing PBA showed the highest resistance to moisture. There are three main temperature regions on TG curves of both series of MDF cement samples. The significant differences in SEM of MDF cements before and after moisture attack and with different polymers were observed.

We detected higher amounts of Syk expression and activity in SLE compared with normal T cells. Selective inhibition of the activity of Syk reduced the strength of TCR-induced calcium responses and slowed the rapid kinetics of actin polymerization exclusively in SLE T cells. Syk and ZAP-70 also associated differently with key molecules involved in cytoskeletal and calcium signaling in SLE T cells. Thus, while Vav-1 and LAT preferentially bound to Syk, phospholipase C-gamma1 bound to both Syk and ZAP-70. Our results show that differential associations of Syk family kinases contribute to the enhanced TCR-induced signaling responses in SLE T cells. Thus, we propose molecular targeting of Syk as a measure to control abnormal T cell responses in SLE.

Impregnation of V 2 O 5 and heating of the V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 -ZrO 2 catalyst beyond 600°C results in the formation of ZrV 2 O 7 , with the simultaneous presence of the TiO 2 rutile phase. However, the vanadia is in a highly dispersed state on the TiO 2 -ZrO 2 mixed oxide support when calcined at less than 600°C.

For obese or muscular built patients these tests are cumbersome and often unsuitable. We describe for the first time a new method, the 'Delhi active test', by which a torn ACL can be detected irrespective of the size or build of the patient. The results of this test are reproducible and the diagnostic accuracy is comparable with other tests. We suggest that the 'Delhi active test' be used as one of the routine clinical methods to detect the torn ACL. ᮊ
The results, presented here discusses the Macro-Defect-Free (MDF) cements prepared from the blend... more The results, presented here discusses the Macro-Defect-Free (MDF) cements prepared from the blends of sulfoaluminate ferrite belite (SAFB) clinkers, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Al 2 O 3 and poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA), styrene/acrylonitrile co-polymer (SACP) or sodium polyphosphate (poly-P). Though MDF cements have several attractive properties, their utilization has been limited due to the insufficient moisture resistance. It is a very challenging task for scientists and technologist to improve the moisture resistance of MDF cements. Therefore, the new MDF cements were subjected to various moist atmospheres to investigate their moisture resistance. The most significance of this work is the improvement of moisture resistance of the studied MDF cements. The aim of this work was to understand the effects of polymers, Al 2 O 3 , OPC and SAFB clinkers in the raw mix and delayed drying on MDF cements and also on their subsequent moisture resistance and thermal stability as well as to discover the new properties of these materials. Their chemical, thermal and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis was also carried out before and after exposure to moisture. PBA was found to be the most suitable polymer for MDF cement synthesis, since the samples containing PBA showed the highest resistance to moisture. There are three main temperature regions on TG curves of both series of MDF cement samples. The significant differences in SEM of MDF cements before and after moisture attack and with different polymers were observed.

We detected higher amounts of Syk expression and activity in SLE compared with normal T cells. Selective inhibition of the activity of Syk reduced the strength of TCR-induced calcium responses and slowed the rapid kinetics of actin polymerization exclusively in SLE T cells. Syk and ZAP-70 also associated differently with key molecules involved in cytoskeletal and calcium signaling in SLE T cells. Thus, while Vav-1 and LAT preferentially bound to Syk, phospholipase C-gamma1 bound to both Syk and ZAP-70. Our results show that differential associations of Syk family kinases contribute to the enhanced TCR-induced signaling responses in SLE T cells. Thus, we propose molecular targeting of Syk as a measure to control abnormal T cell responses in SLE.
