A method for the generation of 5-isoxazolidinones with exocyclic phosphonium ylide functionalitie... more A method for the generation of 5-isoxazolidinones with exocyclic phosphonium ylide functionalities via [2+3] cycloaddition of Ph 3 PCCO and aldonitrones has been developed and applied in the synthesis of 4-alkylidene-5isoxazolidinones via Wittig olefination. The reaction proceeds by BPh 3 catalysis under mild conditions and with a broad substrate scope. A reaction pathway involving the activation of the aldonitrone via interactions with the Lewis acid BPh 3 is proposed.

2-[2-(Dimethylamino)phenyl]-1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)silene (2), generated by deprotonation and tri... more 2-[2-(Dimethylamino)phenyl]-1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)silene (2), generated by deprotonation and trimethylsilanolate elimination from [2-(dimethylamino)phenyl][tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl]methanol (1), dimerizes in a head-to-tail mode with formation of an E/Z mixture of 2,4- , prepared by treatment of [4-(dimethylamino)benzoyl]tris(trimethylsilyl)silane (6) with methyllithium, affords the head-to-head cyclodimer 3,4-dimethyl-3,4-bis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-1,1,2,2-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)-1,2-disilacyclobutane (9) in addition to the linear dimer 1-[1-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)ethenyl]-2-[1-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)ethyl]-1,1,2,2-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)disilane (10). 2-[2-((Dimethylamino)methyl)phenyl]-1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)silene (12), prepared similarly by trimethylsilanolate elimination from [2-((dimethylamino)methyl)phenyl]tris-(trimethylsilyl)silylmethanol , gives under the same conditions [2-((dimethylamino)methyl)benzyl](trimethylsiloxy)bis(trimethylsilyl)silane (14).

ABSTRACT The synthesis, solid-state structure, and UV spectroscopic properties of the first-gener... more ABSTRACT The synthesis, solid-state structure, and UV spectroscopic properties of the first-generation single-core oligosilane dendrimer MeSi[SiMe2Si(SiMe3)2Me]2[SiMe2Si(SiMe3)3] (5) and the tethered analogue (CH2)4[Si(SiMe3)2SiMe2]2Si[SiMe2Si(SiMe3)3]Me (4) are reported. UV spectroscopic measurements in solution and in the solid state (diffuse reflectance) show the absorption maximum of tetramethylene-tethered 4 to be shifted to wavelengths longer than those of 5, the dendrimers MeSi[SiMe2Si(SiMe3)3]3 (6) and MeSi[SiMe2Si(SiMe3)2Me]3 (7), and even that of the linear heptasilane Si7Me16. This can be explained by the results of the X-ray analysis of 4 and 5, which reveal for 4 the presence of an A−D−A−D conformer, which is optimal for σ-conjugation, whereas in 5 only D−D−O−D conformers have been found.

The first part deals with recent aspects of low-valent transition metal siloxide chemistry, while the second part describes some developments in the chemistry of transition metal siloxides in high oxidation states, in particular with regard to the stability of the M–OSi bond. The third part highlights applications of well-defined late and early transition metal siloxides as “single site” catalysts in homogeneous catalysis. Special emphasis is placed on the steric and electronic influence of the siloxide ligand on the activity, selectivity, and stability of the catalytically active metal species.

ABSTRACT The ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide, l-LA, to give poly-l-lactide by R2Sn(OPri)... more ABSTRACT The ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide, l-LA, to give poly-l-lactide by R2Sn(OPri)2 compounds, where R=Bun and p-XC6H4 (X=CF3, F, H, Me and OMe) has been studied in benzene over a temperature range. There is a relatively small variation in ΔH≠ as a function of R with all the values falling within the range 11±2 kcalmol−1. The entropy of activation, ΔS≠, is consistently large and negative, −50±5eu, supporting the view that the ring-opening event, the enchainment step involves a highly ordered transition state. The crystal and molecular structures of the compounds Ph2Sn(OPri)2, (p-FC6H4)2Sn(OPri)2 and (p-Me2NC6H4)3SnOPri are also reported. While the latter compound is monomeric in the solid state the former are both dimeric with a pair of bridging OPri ligands.

The synthesis and structures of the first zwitterionic divalent rare-earth metal silanides of the... more The synthesis and structures of the first zwitterionic divalent rare-earth metal silanides of the formula [Si(SiMe2OMe)3-κ(3)]2M (M-3), where M = Eu, Yb, and Sm, are reported. M-3 compounds feature spirocyclic bicyclooctane structures in which the central rare-earth metal ions are being octahedrally coordinated by six methoxy groups. The reaction of Yb-3 with BPh3 and W(CO)6 respectively generated the trinuclear zwitterions [Ph3BSi(SiMe2OMe)3-κ(3)]2Yb (Yb-4) and [(CO)5WSi(SiMe2OMe)3-κ(3)]2Yb (Yb-5) in good yield.
