T... more Agriculture, Food security, Climate change, and food import are vital components of an economy. This article empirically explored the long-run and short-run impact of these variables on the economic development of Bangladesh by employing the ARDL model over the period from 1971 to 2020. The outcome of the F-bounds test confirmed the existence of a no long-run relationship among the variables examined, and hence, the appropriate model is ARDL. The study then analysed the short-run impact of agriculture, food security, food import and climate change on economic growth. The short-run and long-run coefficients revealed a positive and significant impact of the agriculture sectors on economic growth in Bangladesh in the short-run and long-run. Findings further showed that climate change and food security have a positive and insignificant impact on economic development. Food import has a negative and insignificant impact on economic growth in the short-run and an insignificant positive imp...

Thus, the spending of the government increases also raises aggregate demand to the right, causing output to increase depending on the magnitude and efficiency of expenditure multipliers on growth. The focus of this paper is to examining the impact of general government final consumption expenditure- economic growth nexus for the Gambia for the periods from 1977 to 2017. The econometrics techniques used is Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method to explore the impacts either negative or positive effects of government consumption final expenditure on growth in the Gambia for the periods under study Data for the study were obtained from World Bank(WDI). The findings were interpreted based on a 5 percent significance level of alpha. The m...

Economic statistics concerning the quinquennial features of Agriculture employment (A), net Migra... more Economic statistics concerning the quinquennial features of Agriculture employment (A), net Migration (M), Donor aid (D) and Personal remittances (P), available for over forty years from five West African countries have here been related to the GDP (G). The overall results of a multilinear regression (R2 0.84) have confirmed that the GD ratio, which is an index of aid efficiency, is significantly and positively driven by the PD ratio (high P and low D - favorable) and the PA ratio (high P and low A - favorable), but negatively driven by the PG ratio ( a higher D efficiency is obtained for constant G and lower P). A higher migration flux corresponds to a non-significant rise in the GD ratio. The five countries are clustered, by means of a principal component analysis, into three types. Partial least square regressions fitted to the GD ratio within each cluster provide a long-term polydromic function that highlights certain particular cluster features: reactive to forcing factors, suc...

We carry out qualitative research with a structural questionnaire in which we interviewed selected fish men in the coastal area in the Gambia. The study used a simple random sampling technique, in which from the target population of 6000 people, we selected 384 people randomly as our sample size using the “Yaro Yamane Statistical Formula". The statistical methods used in this study are descriptive statistics, correlation, and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) Method for the analysis. There is a weak negative correlation between the revenue generated from fishing and the management level (correlation coefficient of -0.3561). Despite the covid-19 pandemic, there exists a strong positive correlation between demand for the fish product in the domestic market and revenue generated from fishing (correlation coefficient of 0.7843)....

Therefore, this paper examines sub-Saharan African countries' experiences pertaining to commodity price variation. The main purpose of this article is to examine the impact of commodity price instability in sub-Saharan Africa. To do so, panel data models are used to solve the problems of unobserved variables. The results reveal that the current growth of commodity prices has a positive effect on the growth of the economy. However, the logs of the lags and logs of the leads of the commodity price have negative impacts on the growth of the economy. That means that commodity price variations will continue to harm the economies of sub-Saharan African countries.

In an impoverished country like The Gambia, economic costs of climate change are colossal. This study aims to establish a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model for The Gambia’s agriculture sector to examine the effects of climate change on crops, livestock and sea-level rise. Design/methodology/approach This study used a CGE model with other climate change impact models to compute the impacts of climate change on The Gambia’s agriculture sector. The social accounting matrix calibrates the results from the various models, thereby generating the baseline results which exemplify a “steady-state” and policy shock results illustrating the medium- and long-term effects of climate change on the country’s agriculture sector. Findings The baseline results indicate the status quo showing the neglect of the agriculture sector due to limited investment in the sector. Hence, the sector ...

It is against this background that impact assessment was conducted by measuring the deviation between the baseline equilibrium against the policy scenarios of low and high agriculture technology transfer. The results of the study exemplify that for an effective impact on agriculture technology transfer to occur that will yield an increased rate of return, growth in capital stock, increase welfare, growth in sectoral output, increase in private household demand for sectoral output and value-added activities, West Africa must implement high agriculture technology transfer policy. The results for GDP and CPI indicates that some countries will be impacted positively by either adopting high or low agriculture technology from China. Given the overall results of the study, the sub-region must opt for high agriculture technology to ensure both economic and sectoral gr...

The objective of this paper is to comprehend the impact of climate change on the Gambian economy both in the short and long-run. METHODS: This paper analyses time series data from 1969 to 2016. The study incorporated rainfall and temperature as proxies of climate change into the Cobb-Douglas production function. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller and the Phillips-Perron stationarity test for unit root found that the growth rate of rainfall is not statistically significant with the Mackinnon approximate p-value for z (t) =0.2306. The first lag is significant at 5% and 10% but has a negative coefficient in the first differential up to the fourth lag. In contrast, the growth rate of temperature is statistically significant with a p-value of 0.0196. FINDING: The findings revealed that human capital growth is not significantly related to economic growth i...

Though the frequency of flood, time it takes for flood to last, the cause of floods, affected areas and economic damages are happening in the raining season in the Gambia. This paper studies the impacts of flood disaster on GDP growth, in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors in the Gambia for the period of 1969 to 2016 by applying the Autoregressive Distributed lags models with Dynamac (dynardl) for co-integration and error correction model (ECM) for short-run and long run relationship between the variables. Error correction (EC) specified in the model so as the dependent variable to be run in differences. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, Phillips-Perron (PP) test and Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt- Shin (KPSS) test inspects the stationarity of the variables in the level and first differences. Since the CU...

The purpose of this study is to determine the socio-economic relationship and the impact of the currency on the re-birth of Senegambia and how this new relationship will affect the social and economic exchange rates of the two countries from 1996 to 2017. The results show that in the short-run, the lag of the log of exchange rates and log of terms of trade show a positive sign on the log of GDP. However, inflation and unemployment show a negative sign on the log of GDP. Further, only the log of exchange rate has a positive effect on GDP in the long run. To conclude, the log of exchange rates is significant on the log of GDP in the short-run and long-run. The researchers recommend that policy makers should reduce the tax levied on imported goods from Senegal, reduce domestic prices of goods and services, avoid border c...

This paper analyzed the impacts of climate change on economic growth in Anglophone West Africa with similar background, during the periods 1969-2016. Five growth model equations have been developed to incorporate climate change variables into the model. Panel data estimations such as the fixed effect model, random effect model and Hausman test were used. The results generated show that four equations required the use of the fixed effect, the agriculture equation model required the use of the random effect model. In the fixed effect models, the results show that the growth of human capital has a negative (-0.08 and -0.23) and significant (0.09* and 0.023*) impact on the growth rate of the services and manufacturing sectors. In Anglophone West African countries, the growth rate of the agriculture sector and temperature are statistically significant (0.008 ** and 0.089*) and have a negative impact (-2.04 and -17.7) on the grow...

In testing for the unit root test properties of time series data, all variables are found to be stationary at first differencing level under the Augmented Dickey Fuller test (ADF). The results of VECM demonstrate the existence of a positive and significant relationship between personal remittances received and economic growth both in the long run and short run. Personal remittances received act as a great source of foreign exchange currency and also help in reducing the level of poverty in the developing countries. Total exports have a positive and significant impact on economic growth in the long run but not in the short run. Total imports have a negative and significant impact on economic growth in the long run but in short run. We recommend that the government should encourage ...
