Small and medium sized hotel enterprises play an important role in both the world and the Turkish... more Small and medium sized hotel enterprises play an important role in both the world and the Turkish tourism industry. This study focuses on the problems and future expectations of small and medium sized hotel enterprises which are not popular in national literature. Data were gathered by mail questionnaires delivered to the sample size of 1370 enterprises, 313 of which replied with a response rate of 22.8 percent. Content analysis was employed to analyze the open ended questions at the end of questionnaires in order to reveal the expectations of small and medium sized hotel enterprises from governments, municipalities, association of hoteliers, tour operators and educational institutions. Findings of the study indicated that the enterprises expect the government to reduce tax rates and municipalities to conduct basic municipal services. They require associations to initiate cooperation among the enterprises and tour operators to promote the destination and the country in the foreign markets. Finally, they expect educational institutions to concentrate on applied training. It is concluded that these enterprises, suffering due to various problems and challenges should be empowered by considering them as non-governmental civil organizations supported by legislation.

In this study, the term "mobbing" derived from the relations of people behaviours that are the main concern of neo-classical approach has been tried to be explained and the effects of this concept which is translated into Turkish as physchological violence with its details have been tried to be revealed. Marketing function in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is seen as peripheral to the mana... more Marketing function in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) is seen as peripheral to the management. This paper aims to analyze marketing practices of small and medium sized hotel enterprises (SMHEs) in Turkey, and to comprehend characteristics and differences of two types of businesses, urban and resort hotels, in marketing practices. This quantitative study builds on a university-funded research project aiming to determine characteristics and problems of SMHEs in Turkey. Data were collected by questionnaire forms based on the relevant literature. The findings indicate that both groups, urban and resort hotels, behave mostly in the same manner related to marketing practices, with little differentiation owing to the market segments they serve. It is also seen that hotels display innovative characteristics by the use of new technologies.

However, there are no single studies concerning HRM practices of SMHEs in Turkey. The purpose of the study is to analyze the current HRM practices of SMHEs in Turkey. Findings from 313 SMHEs revealed that they did not possess formal HRM practices and this resulted in lack of professionalism in these firms. The study concludes that small- and medium-sized hotels, apart from microfirms, should formalize their HRM practices. However, formalization of HRM practices requires financial support and training of owner/managers on managerial skills and the importance of HRM. Cooperation and collaboration among the government, educational institutes and firms are recommended in order to improve HRM applications.
