The Sierra Madre Oriental (SMO) is composed of ranges with important regional geological structur... more The Sierra Madre Oriental (SMO) is composed of ranges with important regional geological structures in highly fractured carbonate rocks (Abra Formation), which facilitate the recharge of aquifers. At the regional scale, recharge occurs in the western SMO and locally, in ranges such as Palmillas, La Colmena and Abra, while the regional discharge is to the east in the Huasteca zone. Intermountain valleys, such as El Salto, are located near the regional discharge zone. Three end members were identified in these regions, one related to local flow, another to intermediate and a third to regional flow. These flows define ternary mixing processes in groundwater. In this paper, the evolution of groundwater is studied, which is important for learning the system performance and hydrogeochemical processes through VISHMOD (Virtual Samples in Hydrochemical Modeling) methodology. The mixing model for the intermountain valleys indicates that many recharges occur, for which local flow contributes 68.3%, intermediate flow 12.3% and regional flow 19.4%. The inverse modeling shows that the water-rock interaction, precipitation and/or dissolution of calcite, gypsum and dolomite are the main processes occurring in the aquifer system of the intermountain valleys.

The sulfuric acid spill into the Sonora river, enriched in iron and copper ions from the Buenavis... more The sulfuric acid spill into the Sonora river, enriched in iron and copper ions from the Buenavista del Cobre mine (Cananea), gave way to the formation of various solid iron (Fe) phases. In this study, the mineral phases were identified by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and bulk powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and chemically through acid digestions for multielemental quantification, as well as a 3-step selective sequential extraction (SSE) to quantify the types of Fe oxide phases and the contribution of the associated elements. Jarosite was the only Fe mineral identified by XRD, but XAS allowed identification of jarosite with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) incorporated in its structure, making these elements less prone to leaching. In addition, very poorly crystalline phases such as schwertmannite and ferrihydrite were identified in several samples through XAS, which was confirmed by SSE. The main purpose of this work was to study and understand the interaction that occurred between a... more The main purpose of this work was to study and understand the interaction that occurred between an acid solution spilled from Buenavista del Cobre Mine and the soils located in the Bacanuchi River area. The question put forward in this work was: if the soils of the area were able to cushion the impact of the acid solution?. Two soil profiles were examined: Profile 8A, was located on the riverbank and was affected by the spill, whilst Profile 8B, located on the first terrace of the river valley, remained intact . Both soils profiles were chemically characterized. An additional three surface samples (0-30 cm) were taken for geoavailability tests (RBI, SB2, belonging to Profile 8B, and SB3, belonging to Profile 8A). Two further samples, representing typical unaltered soils of profiles 8A and 8B, were taken for their micromorphological study.
