It is well known that icon research in Russia was already quite remarkable at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Several excellent studies were published in icon research as well as theoretical fields such as theology and philosophy.
The aesthetic approach was given powerful impetus by the famous grand
icon exhibition of Moscow in 1913, organised for the 300th anniversary of the Romanoff dynasty’s reign. (1)
