It used a mixed-method research design. Three research questions were raised and the population covers all primary school English language teachers out of which a sample of 31 teachers was used. A questionnaire was designed and used for collecting quantitative data while an interview schedule was used in generating the qualitative data. Quantitative data were analysed using frequency counts and percentages, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. Findings revealed that the majority of the teachers read the comprehension passage aloud for the pupils at first, and subsequently translate it into Hausa language before selecting a few pupils to read out the passage again. Answering comprehension questions and explanations of new words are later provided. Findings further revealed that the period allocated to teaching reading is inadequate, and there is a gross lack of sufficient English textbooks for pupils’ use, instructional materials as well as a dearth of qualified teachers that can adequately teach reading comprehension. Hence, it was recommended that primary school English teachers should be adequately trained on the strategies of teaching reading comprehension, enough time should be allocated to teaching reading comprehension and adequate relevant textbooks should be provided for pupils at the primary school level.

We argue that the National Policy on Education is elusive or not detailed in terms of specific language(s) to be used in non-monolingual communities. In this chapter, we examine the Nigerian Early-exit/Late-exit models of education through the lens of Threshold Theory. We also propose a framework for the Late-exit Model in the Nigerian Bi/multilingual Education System.

The target population comprised all senior secondary school students in 134 public secondary schools in Gombe. Simple random sampling technique was used to select two intact classes in two secondary schools which gave a sample of 91 students were used for the study. Quasi experimental research design with pre-test post-test experimental and control group were used with 47 students in the experimental group and 44 students in the control group. Data was collected using reading comprehension test. The reading comprehension test had a reliability index of 0.81 using test rest method while analysis was run using mean, standard deviation for the research question and independent sample t-test for research hypothesis. Results showed a mean difference of 1.76 and 0.21 for experimental and control grou...

The foundation of education starts at nursery school since it is a crucial stage for achild's development. This causal-comparative research investigated the effect of teacher quality variables such as age, professional qualification, years of teaching experience, and workshop attendance on nursery school pupils' academic performance in English language in Gombe metropolis. Four teachers and 137 pupils were sampled. Data were collected using two researcher designed instruments: Nursery School Teachers' Quality Variables Questionnaire (NSTQVQ) and Nursery School Pupils' English Achievement Test (NSPEAT). The results revealed that younger teachers have more positive effect on nursery school pupils' performance in English than older teachers. Other variables had no significant effect on pupils' performance in English. Hence, it was recommended that oth...
