Applying Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this paper offered a perspective to understand how power is symbolically exercised through the use of language in Jokowi's State Address on the occasion of 74th Indonesia Independence Day 2019. The analysis started by collecting the clauses with high modulation represented by the modal word 'must'. It appeared as the most frequent modal in the speech text indicating that there is an act of commanding given by the President. However, the high modulated clauses did not give a clear guide on who is the liable Actor for the realization of the discourse of an "Advanced Indonesia". This phenomenon in language was critical to show that there was a possibility of symbolic violence, which happens because of speaker/writer did not clearly state who was the responsible Actor for each specific action required in the discourse of an Advanced Indonesia. In this instance, his speech opens the possibility of symbolic violence. This was proven by 1) the unidentified accountable Actor from the use of the pronoun 'we', 2) hidden agent in nominalization in the Material process, 3) the use of passive voice with Material Process, and 4) the process of Relational Process of Attributive used for characterizing Indonesia.

Just like Television poem by Roald Dahl which employs the language features, puts them as foreground, and affects the readers in meaning making. The structure and figurative languages in the poem creates the tone that can raise people awareness of the bad impact of television for children growth and on the other hand gently reminds today's parents about the goodness of reading books. This study gives empirical evidences of such impression by showing the poetic devices and the language features applied by the poet.

This project combines the interest of Bahau youth generation in technology and the forms of conservation that parents of the Bahau culture want. Those who are benefitted by this project is Dayak Bahau community as well as Indonesia as a multicultural nation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a practice-led approach used in empowering selected Bahau young people. This method is useful in providing guidance to researchers in finding realistic practices that actually bridges the gap between theory and practice during the project. This paper presents two significances: the practical approach and perceptibility in the decision-making process during a research project and the innovation to sustain indigenous traditional arts.

Its unique method of assembling symbolic codes should be apprehended differently from film even though some film technical terms are found applicable. This research takes Taylor Swift's music video for her song You Need to Calm Down (YNTCD) which won two MTV VMA as Video of the Year and Video for Good in 2019. Barthes's theory of semiotics is firstly applied to scrutinise the music video which are done by answering how the denotation and connotation meaning is made to respond these issues. Discourse analysis is then applied to study what discourses are influential in the signification system of the music video. As a response to issues of hate speech, LGBTQ, and media toxic contestation, meaning in this video is built by (1) the objects symbolising personal experiences, (2) borrowing meaning from iconic show, (3) cameos demonstrating social conflict, (4) stage-setting exemplifying media toxic contestation, and (5) the painting indicating historical context. Thus, YNTCD music video symbolically voices a counter discourse to the mentioned social problems.

One of them is the Ritual of Hudo’ Kawit/Ngawit. Held every year marking the beginning of yearly planting cycle, Hudo’ Kawit is one of the biggest annual events for Dayak Bahau in several regions of East Kalimantan, especially Samarinda. Delivered mostly in Dayak Bahau vernacular, the meaning and purpose of this ritual are not easy to understand by the outsiders. However, this ritual is essentially based on a long live folklore existing in the folk group. So, this study aims to convey how Baraa’ Hudo’ Kawit (the main prayer in the ritual) represents perception of God in Dayak Bahau Commnuitiy and how motifs of good and evil is transferred from the ritual. To answer these questions, theories related to Folklore & Rituals (Joseph Campbell, Stith Thompson), and Collective Unconsciousness & Archetypal Motifs (Carl Gustav Jung) are applied to the texts of Baraa’ Hudo’ Kawit. Structuralist approach is used to examine the elements of the text to relate them to the wider cultural context of Dayak Bahau community. The findings are that Baraa’ Hudo’ Kawit has given a validation to the ritual as the expression of their experience on nature and divinity. Meanwhile, the folklore recited in the prayer delivers a set of values which show the significances of Hudo’ Kawit for wider society. Those values are 1. that evil deed should not be fought back with violence, 2. that there is power in the universe that support goodwill, 3. that arrogance counts as evil deed, 4. that human depends to the others, and 5. that forgiveness reconciliation is the key to live in harmony. Such values are the key for the survival of the culture and the bond among the believers as one cultural identity. Thus, Indonesians in general are able to get the picture of the way Dayak Bahau people perceive their belief in God and how they portray the belief in day to day manners because there is universal meaning which is applicable to other collective importance.
