A micromorphological study of archaeopaleontological sediments was conducted to provide the characterization of natural dynamics, sedimentary processes, an environmental analysis and interpretation of stratigraphic record. Then, is to localize, with the study of the stratigraphic sequences, the place of the occupation or the lithotop of the occupation surfaces. This is used in order to elucidate habitat preferences of the Orce hominins during the Lower Pleistocene.

Se refieren al escenario electoral en la provincia, a la presentación de dos listas justicialistas que -entendía Rivas- contradecía la Constitución Nacional y su garantía de representación de la minoría; y al justicialismo como fuerza determinante en el mapa electoral. Jorge Rivas fue víctima de un asalto violento el 13 de noviembre de ese mismo año, cuyas severas consecuencias le impidieron volver a hablar, aunque retomó su labor política y legislativa. This report presents results from a process of qualitative research and data synthesis carried ou... more This report presents results from a process of qualitative research and data synthesis carried out with indigenous men and women living in small towns and villages around 50km from Guatemala city. The work was carried out to provide an evidence base for PASMO’s work on family planning (FP) and HIV prevention with indigenous peoples. The PEER method was used to generate in-depth narrative data about the social and economic context of these communities; relationships (including marriage and pre-marital relationships); and perceptions of reproductive health (including FP and HIV and AIDS). Data were processed and synthesised using the FoQus on Segmentation approach, producing two dashboard instruments on FP and HIV prevention. The dashboards are a synthesis of research findings, designed to help marketers and programmers develop and position products, services and behavior change interventions that are better tailored to the target group.

The coupled nature of human and earth system dynamics has become increasingly apparent as humanit... more The coupled nature of human and earth system dynamics has become increasingly apparent as humanity's environmental footprint has increased. Yet, the methods and processes used to understand and guide those dynamics remain deficient in their treatment of that coupling. Lack of bi-directional coupling of human system dynamics with the dynamics of the larger environment within which humanity operates stymies the ability of researchers and policymakers to anticipate and limit the unintended consequences of technological change and help guide associated societal transitions. This paper lays out elements of a research agenda to ameliorate those deficiencies.

Despite a vast literature concerning magnetic properties of loess sequences, we still do not full... more Despite a vast literature concerning magnetic properties of loess sequences, we still do not fully understand how magnetic components and properties are related to particular soil-forming processes that can vary with each type of genetic horizon. In order to establish the role of lithogenic factors in the link between magnetic properties and soil-forming processes, we carried out a study of two complete profiles of buried interglacial Luvisols, one formed in loess in Russia (Alexandrovsky quarry) and the other in volcaniclastics in Mexico (Barranca Tlalpan). In both profiles, soil genetic horizons have contrasting differences of their magnetic properties. In the Alexandrovsky profile, the magnetic susceptibility (w) is enhanced in the paleosol compared to parent material. In the Barranca Tlalpan sequence, w enhancement is absent in the soil profile. Increase of fine-grained magnetic components in the soil is attributed to neoformed minerals. However, this process cannot compensate for the loss of lithogenic magnetic minerals in any of the genetic horizons, and the resulting trend is w depletion in the whole soil profile. The pedogenic environment of eluvial horizons in both Luvisols is destructive to all magnetic components, both primary and secondary. Higher concentrations of antiferromagnetic components (hematite and goethite) found in E horizons are related to redoximorphic processes.

Belize has the highest rates of HIV infection in Central America and is experiencing a generalize... more Belize has the highest rates of HIV infection in Central America and is experiencing a generalized epidemic. The Garífuna, a minority ethnic population, is at risk for HIV. This study uses survey data from Garífuna men and women to examine the frequency of multiple partnerships as well as sociodemographic characteristics and behavioral constructs correlated with having multiple partners. A high proportion of respondents reported having multiple partners, but rates were significantly higher for men, and men had a higher mean number of partners than women. A high proportion of respondents reported having a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the last year, with more men reporting a history of STIs than women. Regression results show the importance of improving men and women's perceived susceptibility for HIV and encouraging them to know their HIV status. Reinforcing a social norm for partner reduction would also benefit men. Study findings support the need for HIV counseling and testing in Garífuna communities as well as STI prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This study demonstrates that reducing multiple partnerships among Garífuna men and women is critical for reducing the spread of HIV in Belize.
