The European research project PARAMIX aims to improve the techniques for hot mix recycling in plant and cold mix in situ recycling, so as to increase the amount of reclaimed asphalt and develop competitive road pavement rehabilitation techniques. This paper deals with the design of hot mix asphalts for the project. The different phases in the design process are described: the characterization of the reclaimed asphalt and the new material components, the volumetric mix design procedure and the laboratory study. Two types of mixes were considered: stone mastic asphalt and asphalt concrete. The percentages of reclaimed asphalt in these mixes were high: up to 30 % for the SMA and 50% for the asphalt concrete. A reduction of the temperature generates a significant reduction in energy consumption, emissions and fumes. Also health and safety conditions for the road workers are improved. This paper presents the first results of a common research project of Nynas and BRRC, in which three techniques for reducing production temperatures are considered: the addition of waxes as viscosity reducers, the addition of zeolites as foaming agent and the use of foamed bitumen. The first phase of the project aims at developing laboratory procedures for assessing the potential of each technique to reduce the production temperature. If the mix undergoes curing after compaction, procedures to simulate and possibly accelerate the curing process also need to be developed. ZSV can be measured in a dynamic shear rheometer in an oscillation test or in a creep test. The diversity of binders that is available nowadays (wide range of penetration values, pure and modified, waxy binders, oxidized binders, etc.), requires the development of test methods applicable to all of these binders. This paper presents results of ZSV measurements in oscillation mode on a selection of four binders. The measurements are made with different rheometers in different labs, to study repeatability and reproducibility. The binders are also subjected to the repeated creep test proposed in the United States. The creep stiffness measured in this test was shown to be a more appropriate indicator for rutting than the parameter G*/sinδ, particularly for the case of PmB's. There is already a lot of know-how on various techniques for producing warm mix asphalt, but there is insufficient data available about the impact of these techniques on the final performance characteristics of the asphalt. Nynas and BRRC are working together on a research project, to study the most important and promising warm mix techniques on laboratory; and field scale. These techniques are: the use of foamed bitumen, the addition of waxes to the bitumen and the addition of zeolites to the mixture. The present paper focuses on the last technique. The performance of warm asphalt mixtures produced with different types and quantities of zeolites is compared to the performance of a reference hot mix asphalt. Several aspects have been studied: compactability, permanent deformation, water sensitivity and low temperature cracking. Small scale field trials were made to validate the findings of the laboratory research.
