Today’s physicians and nurses working in operating rooms and intensive care units have to deal wi... more Today’s physicians and nurses working in operating rooms and intensive care units have to deal with an ever increasing amount of data. More and more medical devices are delivering information, which has to be perceived and interpreted in regard to patient status and the necessity to adjust therapy. The combination of high information load and insufficient usability creates a severe challenge for the health personnel with respect to proper monitoring of these devices respective to acknowledging alarms and timely reaction to critical incidents. Smart Applications are a new kind of decision support systems that incorporate medical expertise in order to help health personnel in regard to diagnosis and therapy. By means of a User Centered Design process of two Smart Applications (anaesthesia monitor display, diagnosis display), we illustrate which approach should be followed and which processes and methods have been successfully applied in fostering the design of usable medical devices.

ABSTRACT The work in intensive care units and operation rooms is characterised by an increasing n... more ABSTRACT The work in intensive care units and operation rooms is characterised by an increasing number of (partly networked) devices that measure and present patients’ vital signs and help in medical therapy. For physicians and nurses it becomes increas- ingly difficult to keep an eye on all these parameters and to interpret them appropriately. There is a trend towards creating decision support systems which incorporate medical expertise and help the health personnel to make decisions in regard to diagnosis and therapy. The difficulty is that of designing stand- ardised systems for a heterogeneous group of users in a highly complex and dynamic working environment. By means of two examples we illustrate which general guidelines should be followed and which processes and methods can be relied on for efficiently designing usable medical devices. The examples are an Anaesthetic Display to help dosing the pharmaceuticals, as well as a Diagnosis Display which assists the health personnel in interpreting the vital signs with respect to medical diagnosis.

So ist nicht verwunderlich, daß auch die Sprache ein differenziertes Arsenal an sprachlichen Mitteln zur Kommunikation zeit- bezogener Informationen bereitstellt. Mittlerweile liegt eine beachtliche Anzahl linguistischer und sprachphilosophischer Arbeiten zum Thema "Zeit" vor (z.B. Comrie, 1985; Fleischman, 1990), aber psycholinguistische Untersuchungen sind noch rar.
