Further studies are needed to evaluate the effect of different feeding modalities (e.g. formula feeding) on gut flora development in IAP-exposed newborns.

Usually benign and generally discovered incidentally at imaging, meningiomas can also be responsible for severe neurological symptoms and deficits, with potentially high morbidity and non-negligible mortality. Therefore, neuroimaging plays a crucial role in meningiomas diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and long-term surveillance, for early detection of both recurrence in treated patients and disease progression in untreated ones. Here, we review conventional findings in meningiomas’ imaging, review the role for advanced diagnostic techniques, and offer an overview on possible future neuroimaging applications.

The volume of each herniated disc was determined before and after the treatment. Results: Multiple linear regression analysis showed a strong correlation between post-treatment LDH volume percent change and both pre-treatment LDH volume and pre-treatment EQ-VAS (p<0.05), while age showed only a weak positive correlation with post-treatment LDH volume percent change (p<0.1). No association was found for other factors, such as sex and herniation disc level. Conclusions: In conclusion, age, baseline LDH volume and self-assessed disease s...

In one of them, three doses of Rtx (375mg/m2) allowed to suspend immunosuppressive drugs and reduce PDN, maintaining remission for 25 months. PDN associated with Rapamycin was restarted, for a relapsewith only a partial remission. Twoadditional doses of Rtx again induced and maintained remission, which still persists on PDN 0.12mg/kg/day and azathioprine 2.38mg/kg/day. Treatment with seven doses of Rtx induced remission in the other patient, with PDN sparring up to 0.26mg/kg/48h associated with 1.31mg/kg/day of azathioprine. Treatment with Rtx was well tolerated, with, as only side effect a persistent and asymptomatic hypogammaglobulinaemia. In conclusion Rtx proved effective in inducing and maintain remission in refractory GCH-AHA with a steroid sparring effect; however the optimal frequency and duration of RTx treatment remain to be defined and must be individualized due to interpatient variability. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.dld.2015.07.090

Preterm birth is associated with variable degrees of brain injury and adverse neurodevelopmental ... more Preterm birth is associated with variable degrees of brain injury and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Neuroimaging has been investigated as a predictor of outcome in this population. Head ultrasound allows for rapid bedside evaluation of the neonatal brain for early intraventricular hemorrhage surveillance and later detection of periventricular leukomalacia. Computed tomography can provide excellent views for bones, hemorrhage, extra-axial space, and the ventricles but is rarely used for prognostic purposes. Magnetic resonance imaging allows for high-resolution images of brain structures, differentiation of white and gray matter, visualization of the brain stem and posterior fossa, and getting additional physiological information with specialized sequences. Though controversial, the use of magnetic resonance imaging, at term equivalent, as a predictor of later outcome in preterm infants has been increasing and has been advocated by some as a standard practice. In this article, we review and contrast the use of these various imaging modalities in predicting neurodevelopmental outcome of premature infants.

The evaluation of brain parenchyma via MRI plays a central role in the diagnostic assessment of these conditions, being mandatory to exclude the presence of other underlying causes in determining the clinical phenotype. Once these possible causes are ruled out, the diagnosis is usually researched in the wide range of hereditary or sporadic ataxias. Methods We here propose a review of the main clinical and conventional imaging findings of the most common hereditary degenerative ataxias, to help neuroradiologists in the evaluation of these patients. Results Hereditary degenerative ataxias are all usually characterized from a neuroimaging standpoint by the presence, in almost all cases, of cerebellar atrophy. Nevertheless, a proper assessment of imaging data, extending beyond the mere evaluation of cerebellar atrophy, evaluating also the pattern of volume loss as well as concomitant MRI signs, is crucial to ac...

However, clinicians still struggle to predict the course of cognitive function. To evaluate baseline clinical and imaging predictors of cognitive abilities worsening over time, we performed a latent trajectory analysis for cognitive performances in MS patients, up to 15 years from disease onset. Methods We collected age, sex, education, dominant and non-dominant 9-hole peg test (9HP) and timed 25-foot walk (T25-FW) as well as MRI measures (grey matter volume and lesion load) within 6 months from disease diagnosis for relapsing–remitting MS (RR-MS) patients. At diagnosis and over the follow-up, we also assessed cognitive status through the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT). Cognitive impairment was defined by applying age-, gender- and education-adjusted normative values. Group-based trajectory analysis was performed to determine trajectories, and the predict...

The incidence of obesity and its related conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ... more The incidence of obesity and its related conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has dramatically increased in all age groups worldwide. Given the health consequences of these conditions, and the subsequent economic burden on healthcare systems, their prevention and treatment have become major priorities. Because standard dietary and lifestyle changes and pathogenically-oriented therapies (e.g. , antioxidants, oral hypoglycemic agents, and lipid-lowering agents) often fail due to poor compliance and/or lack of efficacy, novel approaches directed toward other pathomechanisms are needed. Here we present several lines of evidence indicating that, by increasing energy extraction in some dysbiosis conditions or small intesti-
