Consumption of energy drinks by both recreational and competitive athletes has increased dramatically in recent years, though they are often unaware of what is being ingested, believing to improve their physical and psychological performance. The literature shows contradictions about the capacity of energy drinks to enhance psychophysical results. In relation to probable adverse effects induced by the irregular consumption of energy drinks, which in several cases are not so clear, we decided to investigate the possible relationship between the intake of energy drinks and the presence of mental and physical stress in young people and athletes. For the purpose, in the present work, we studied the chemical composition of EOs obtained from different hemp varieties, namely Felina 32 and Carmagnola Selezionata (CS) using monoecious, male, and female inflorescences, and we evaluated their mosquitocidal activities on larvae and pupae of two main malaria vectors, Anopheles gambiae and An. stephensi. Tachykinins inhibit salt appetite when applied intracranially in a number of brain regions and ma... more Tachykinins inhibit salt appetite when applied intracranially in a number of brain regions and may function as endogenous inhibitors of sodium intake. To test the hypothesis that induced increases in salt appetite might involve disinhibition via a reduction in endogenous tachykinin expression, we used a semi-quantitative in situ hybridization analysis to investigate changes in brain areas expressing preprotachykinin-A (PPT-A) and preprotachykinin-B (PPT-B) mRNAs of rats after 1 day of sodium depletion (1d Na dep). PPT-A mRNA levels were detected in neurons of the olfactory tubercle (Tu), the nucleus of the olfactory tubercle (LOT), the dorsal and ventral caudate-putamen (d-CPu and v-CPu), the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), the medial preoptic area (mPOA), the habenula (Hb) and the postero-dorsal part of the amygdala (MePD). PPT-B mRNA levels were measured in fundus striati (FStr), d-CPu, v-CPu, BNST, mPOA, dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMD), arcuate nucleus (Arc), central amygdaloid nucleus (CeL), basolateral amygdaloid nucleus (BLV), LOT, Hb and basal nucleus of Meynert (B). 1d Na dep reduced by 33-61% the mean number of PPT-A grains/cell in Tu, LOT, d-CPu, BNST, mPOA, Hb and MePD compared to control animals. Levels of PPT-B mRNA were not reduced as much by 1d Na dep, although statistically significant reductions of 26, 34 and 17% were found in v-CPu, BNST and B, respectively. These findings, therefore, support the hypothesis that endogenous tachykinins exert an inhibitory influence over sodium appetite.

Since both ethanol and cannabinoids are known to impair learning and memory, the present study investigated in rats the effects of combined exposure to ethanol and delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in a memory task, the object recognition test. The results of the present study provide evidence that ethanol, voluntarily ingested in alcohol-preferring rats, and THC, given by intraperitoneal injection, have a synergic action to impair object recognition, when a 15-min interval was adopted between the sample phase and the choice phase of the test. Neither voluntary ethanol ingestion nor 2 or 5 mg/kg of THC were able per se to modify object recognition in these experimental conditions, but when voluntary ethanol ingestion was combined with administration of these doses of THC object recognition was markedly impaired. THC impaired object recognition only at the dose of 10 mg/kg, when its administration was not combined with that of ethanol. The selective cannabinoid CB(1) receptor antagonist SR 141716A (N-(piperidin-1-yl)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1(2, 4-dichloro-phenyl)-4-methyl-1H-pyrazole carboxamide.HCl) at the dose of 1 mg/kg reversed the amnesic effect of THC, 10 mg/kg, suggesting that the effect is mediated by this receptor subtype. The synergism of ethanol and THC was not detected when an inter-trial interval of 1 min was adopted. The present findings are in keeping with the notion that Cannabis derivatives impair memory processes and provide evidence for a synergic action of THC and ethanol, thus emphasizing the risks consequent to their co-administration.

This study investigated the sensitivity of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and of Wistar Ky... more This study investigated the sensitivity of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and of Wistar Kyoto rats (WKR) to the antidipsogenic action of the tachykinin eledoisin (ELE). Drinking was evoked by: (a) intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of angiotensin II, (b) subcutaneous (s.c.) administration of hypertonic NaCl (1.5 M; 1 ml/100 g b.wt.) or (c) 18 h of water deprivation with free access to food. In accordance with previous studies, the dipsogenic effect of all three treatments was exaggerated in the SHR. And when treated with i.c.v. ELE (12.5-25 ng/rat) they were far less sensitive than WKR to its antidipsogenic action on angiotensin-induced drinking. Smaller differences in strain sensitivity were also observed for the effect of ELE on cell dehydration- and on water deprivation-induced drinking, but only at the dose of 200 and 50 ng/rat, respectively. The different sensitivity of the SHR to the antidipsogenic effect of ELE supports the idea that tachykininergic mechanisms for control of water intake are differently regulated in the SHR than they are in the normotensive WKR.

Compound 1 (cyclodoxazosin) was a potent alpha(1B)-adrenoceptor antagonist displaying antiproliferative activity higher than that of doxazosin in cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Because of its antitumor efficacy at low concentrations, lower apoptotic activity in NHDF vs tumor cells, and antiangiogenetic effect, 1 showed a better therapeutic profile relative to doxazosin.
