Twelve non-normal bivariate distributions were constructed to investigate (a) the effects which c... more Twelve non-normal bivariate distributions were constructed to investigate (a) the effects which coarsely grouped, skewed marginal distributions have on the correlation coefficient and (b) the accuracy of current methods of correction for grouping.The investigation revealed that the correlation coefficient is severely limited in the values it can assume when the underlying marginals are highly, oppositely skewed and one or both of the marginals has only two class intervals. The study further revealed that the correction formula (which is based on the assumption of underlying, normal marginals) is extremely accurate, regardless of the degree of marginal skewness, except where one or both of the marginals has only two class intervals.The major conclusions of the study were that the use of asymmetrical, dichotomous variables should be avoided in correlation analysis, and that the correction for coarse grouping should be applied, on an experimental basis, to correlations computed for joint distributions of coarsely categorized variables.

I'm hoping this piece will be part of a book I'm writing called MY FUNDRAISING JOB PRETTY MUCH SU... more I'm hoping this piece will be part of a book I'm writing called MY FUNDRAISING JOB PRETTY MUCH SUCKS. I came up with the idea for the book over a year ago. Since then I've been doing what most writers do. Going back and forth on what the thrust of the book should be and what topics it should include and where those topics should get placed. I especially struggled with what the thrust of the book should be. Finally I decided that, if your job does really suck, most of the blame can be laid at the feet of two people. Your boss is one; you're the other one. So the thrust of the book should be on the relationship you have with your boss. That's as much context as I want to provide for right now. I hope you're okay with that and that you'll keep reading. Early on in the book I say: THE VAST MAJORITY OF COLLEGE EDUCATED PEOPLE IN FUNDRAISING DON'T HAVE THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO BE A GOOD BOSS. I plan to go into great depth to back up that assertion. And one of the things I'm hankering to talk about is bosses who are nonstop talkers. They have a massive communication skill deficiency. To put it mildly, they are lousy listeners. And part and parcel of being a good boss is being a good listener. Okay. Nonstop talking. I used to think it was a habit only a few people had. And I didn't give it much thought. Now I do. Now I think it's very common. We all have a few nonstop talkers in our "life space." Like the neighbor down the street. You try to avoid the guy if you see him out in front of his house. If you're in your car and he sees you, you're probably all right. You wave with the window down, speed up a little, and yell, "Hey, Billy, late for a soccer game. Have a good weekend." If you're on foot, you could be screwed. Why? Because he's gonna trap you and talk about stuff you couldn't care less about. Plus, he won't ask you one question about you. Even if he does, once you start to answer, he'll interrupt and turn the conversation right back around to his stuff.

For much of that time the two of us were out of touch, but, somehow, that hasn't mattered. The bond we formed when Eisenhower was still in office has endured. Through agonizing losses of parents and siblings, joint replacements, divorces, a president evicted from the White House, kids and grandkids, a moon landing, and, well, how much time you got?

Take French. I've been a student of it off and on for over 50 years. I've gotten pretty good at it. So much so that native speakers often compliment me on my fluency. When they do, I thank them graciously and quickly add "Plus je sais, plus je ne sais pas." The more I know, the more I don't know.
For a number of years John Sammis and I have been pushing colleges and universities to examine th... more For a number of years John Sammis and I have been pushing colleges and universities to examine the data they (or their vendors) collect for alums who are members of their online communities. For example, we encourage them to look at very basic things like: The number of e-mails an alum has opened since it's been possible to get such data The number of "click throughs" an alum has made to the website in response to an e-mail, an e-newsletter, and the like The number of times an alum visits the website The date and time of each visit Why do we think they should be recording and examining these kinds of data? Because (based on some limited but compelling evidence) we think such data are related to how much and how often alums give to their alma maters as well as how engaged they are (e.g., reunion attendance, volunteering, etc.) to these institutions. To ignore such data means leaving money on the table and losing a chance to spot alums who are truly interested in the school, even if they'll never become major givers. Frankly the response to our entreaties has been less than heartening: "We don't have an online community. If we get one, that's probably a year or two away." "With the explosion of social media, we're more interested in what we can learn about our alums through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter … I mean those are the sites our alums will be going to, not ours." "You want us to get record-by-record data from the vendor who maintains our site? Surely you jest. We're lucky if they'll send us decipherable summary data on email openings and click-throughs." But we're nothing if not persistent. So what we've done here is put together some data from a four year higher education institution that has a pretty active
