This paper describes such a model. A simplified description of a theory of cortical functioning is presented, followed by a discussion of two patterns of human relationship behaviors that are explained within the context of the model. A comparison of the current model and the dominant Big Five model of personality traits is then briefly discussed. Conclusions focus on the need for future research to determine the effectiveness of a clinical biopsychology approach, including the accuracy of the relationship patterns.

With thousands of articles being published yearly in a number of existing journals, what can another journal add to the field that is not already available? What can attract neuroscientists to submit their best articles to an unproven journal when so many exist with clear track records? Rigorous standards in what is considered acceptable are necessary if a journal is to have true impact on the field, but who wishes to consider subjecting one’s work to such standards when the journal’s future is unknown? Can a new journal actually set any kind of new standard that does not already exist?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction syndrome and myofascial pain dysfunction (MPD) syndrome... more Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction syndrome and myofascial pain dysfunction (MPD) syndrome have been primarily viewed as dental problems and have only recently received close attention by psychologists. The literature reviewed in the present paper reveals that a substantial portion of the population is affected by these disorders. There is, however, a great deal of confusion that exists in relation to the aetiology and treatment of these syndromes. In an attempt to clarify the current understanding of these disorders, the present review first presents a discussion of the symptoms which comprise each of these syndromes and the proposed physiological mechanisms associated with each symptom. Next, the aetiological theories for each of these syndromes are reviewed and critically evaluated. Treatments which have been derived from the theoretical models are then discussed. Finally, methodological considerations involving classification, assessment and treatment issues are presented and future research needs are outlined.
Patterns of oral behavior have been suggested as factors leading to head and facial pain. The pre... more Patterns of oral behavior have been suggested as factors leading to head and facial pain. The present study evaluated the frequency with which certain oral habits were self-reported by five groups of Ss: Facial Pain. Tension Headache, Migraine Headache, Combined Migraine and Tension Headache and No Pain. Four oral behavior patterns were found to be significantly different among groups. These were diurnal bruxism. thrusting the jaw forward, cupping the chin in the hand and resting the hand on the side of the face. When Ss were reclassified into those reporting no facial pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, or a combination of TMJ and jaw muscle pain, the variables of diurnal bruxism and resting the hand on the side of the face were found to predict significantly both pain groups. However, the resting the hand factor was negatively weighted for the TMJ Pain group only. One other factor, nocturnal bruxism. was found to be self-reported at a significantly higher frequency in the Combined Facial Pain group compared to the No Facial Pain and TMJ Pain groups. Discussion focuses on the implications of the present findings on research in the facial pain and headache areas.

The current paper presents a theoretical argument that the hippocampus has only one purpose: the binding of parallel cortical circuits. The paper begins with a discussion of cortical columns as the common binary digit (bit) for all neocortical processing. This is followed by details on the Dimensional Systems Model and its explanation of cortical circuitry. As opposed to any independent function in cognitive processing, the hippocampal cells are viewed as serving a slave function to cortical circuits since they are activated as part of a cortical-hippocampal-thalamic-cortical circuit. As part of that circuit, the hippocampus serves the role of reactivating the cortical circuits involved in complex memories (i.e., involving multiple cortical circuits) to facilitate the consolidation of the involved cortical columns' interconnections. Next there is a brief discussion of prior theoretical views explaining hippocampal involvement in memory and spatial representations. To facilitate an appreciation of the unique aspects of the new model, it is contrasted against the extensively developed Component Process Model. Conclusions focus on how a complete model of cortical cognitive processing is necessary to adequately explain the purpose of the hippocampus, viewed as a complex structure with an elegantly simple function.

The current paper describes neuropsychological assessment in two cases of adulthood mild traumatic brain injury. Both patients showed objective results demonstrating cognitive impairment. The first patient experienced a head trauma around the age of 4 and the other patient had a head injury around the age of 7. Discussion focuses on the need for the systematic consideration of a history of childhood head injury as a moderating factor that may account for why a subgroup of patients show cognitive deficits following MTBI.

Within the discussion, novel views on the roles of the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and cingulate cortex are presented. Additionally, an applied Clinical Biopsychological Model (CBM) based on the DSM will be discussed as related to psychological treatment with chronic pain patients. Three specific areas that have not been adequately addressed in the psychological treatment of chronic pain patients will be discussed based on the CBM. The treatment approaches have been effectively used in a clinical setting. Conclusions focus on a call for researchers and clinicians to fully evaluate the value of both the DSM and CBM.

It provides an explanation of neurophysiological pain processing based the Dimensional Systems Model (DSM), a theory of higher cortical functions. Novel views on the roles of the basal ganglia, cerebellum, and cingulate cortex are presented. The applied Clinical Biopsychological Model (CBM) explains psychological treatment with chronic pain patients. Three new areas of treatment focus are discussed. These involve specific approaches to deal with influential negative emotional memories (e.g., parental abuse, peer bullying), interpersonal relationship stressors, and loss-related depression, all of which have been shown to influence chronic pain disorders. Based on the proposal that the two purposes of creation are the birth and maturation of Jesus and the creation of his mate, the role of humans is discussed. Explanations are provided on how the theory allows the Bible and cosmology/physics to provide complementary information related to current mysteries in physics, such as antimatter annihilation, the Cold Spot, and dark matter. Information is provided that supports the view that the creation stories in Genesis 1 and 2 are factual. The nature of angels, demons, sons of God, gentiles, and end times are discussed in relation to the theory. It is hoped this paper will encourage openness to the Bible as being accurate based on scientific grounds.
