Little research has been carried out in Ireland, however, where the focus has been on the broader values of community heritage and archaeology, and references to well-being are usually anecdotal. This article is an introductory overview of the relationship between community archaeology and well-being. It begins by looking at the types of archaeological projects engaged in by Irish communities and the levels of involvement that are possible. It then examines what is meant by well-being, before looking at evidence for the impacts of community and heritage projects on both individual and community well-being, such as the importance of accessibility and inclusive practices. The potentials for negative impacts are also discussed. International research and projects are referred to throughout. The article ends with a recognition of the importance of a better understanding of the social impacts of community archaeology projects on well-being, the potential for specific research in an Irish context, suggestions of areas in which such research might be
undertaken and the proposal that a well-being strategy should be devised for the Irish heritage sector.

Folklore allows us to access opinions and beliefs among the general population of the 19th and into the 20th centuries, while the development of heritage legislation from the days of Treasure Trove to the National Monuments Act and its amendments in the independent Irish State highlights the importance of antiquities in the formation of state identity. The important legal case surrounding the discovery of the Derrynaflan Hoard in the 1980s, introduced here, reveals the reasons behind some significant differences between the legal situations in the Republic of Ireland and the UK and elsewhere when it comes to reporting discoveries of antiquities (of any material) and metal detecting

The factors influencing land value as mentioned in an 8thcentury AD law tract are also applied to part of the early medieval landscape of Achill Island in an attempt to challenge our perceptions of the west coast as a remote and somewhat wild environment of limited economic potential.
