Plenty of potential Viking sites are scattered across this largely undeveloped landscape, but a concentrated campaign of fieldwork and excavation is needed to confirm their Viking origin (A. Ritchie 1993, 61).

A study in the Faroe Islands resulted in an initial interpretation of landscape history which subsequent examination showed to be flawed. Difficulties were generated by a combination of working across several languages (including local dialect) and the problems arising from enquiry and explanation concerning unusual

The sites normally contained archaeological structures and typically had place-names featuring the Old Irish element áirge attached to them. The whole concept of shielings as part of the early Faroese farming economy was reassessed by Ditlev L. D. Mahler during the 1980s, and he produced a distribution map of these sites. No shielings were noted in the outer Norðuroyar on this map. In 2001, however, such a site was recorded on Fugloy. A network of agents helped establish an extensive collection of artefacts. The Danish governor in the Faroe Island, Christian Ployen, acted as such when he visited Shetlandin 1839. One of the interesting objects he secured for Copenhagen was a fragment of a Viking comb, which until now has been stored unnoticed in the National Museum of Denmark.
