Participants were 55 French-speaking second graders and their parents. Two dimensions (quantity and quality) of parents' involvement were investigated. Parents were distinguished as primary or secondary helpers with homework. For each group, regression analyses were conducted to test the moderator effect of each dimension of parent involvement: (1) between children's verbal abilities and achievement in French; and (2) between children's nonverbal abilities and achievement in mathematics. Results indicated a positive relation between children's verbal abilities and their achievement in French, but not between children's nonverbal abilities and their achievement in mathematics. A negative relation between the duration of primary paren...

A total of 63 seven-year-old children and their parents participated in the study. Mothers and fathers worked separately with their children on a microcomputer activity, and these activities were recorded and coded to ascertain children's help-seeking and parents' tutoring behaviors. The results indicated that mothers and fathers adjusted their tutoring strategies according to a contingent-shift rule--parents offered more specific support when the children failed and offered less specific support when the children succeeded in their attempts to solve the task. Mothers' and fathers' modulation of their level of tutoring were not different and were not influenced by the sex of the children. Neither boys nor girls were more likely to seek help from their same-sex parent t...

Three specific formal abilities were measured: combinatory, probability, control of variables. For the control of variable tasks, the percentage of students reaching the formal levels did not exceed 50% while that of probabi-lity and combinatory tasks went up to 90%. The results are analyzed according to school training effect and content of tasks.

The first part of the article argues that sex equality is a social value independent of the fact that men and women differ in certain ways. When researchers use scientific data to defend personal values and beliefs, it is an abuse of power that affects both their own credibility and that of science itself. The second part demonstrates the importance of developing a better understanding of those sex differences, both large and small, even if men and women have more points in common than differences. Researchers rarely take context into account when they measure different traits and compare scores instead of comparing the developmental processes involved in women and men's adaptation to their environment. The interaction between environment and biological predispositions is inherent in the developmental processes requiring further investigation.

Mother-child collaboration was observed during two number-related tasks: a dot-to-dot drawing task and a matching number representations task. Patterns of responsibility sharing in task resolution were coded from videos, using a cross-classification strategy adapted from Parent (2000). Using mother-child interactions as a means to assess early numeracy skills, we replicated past findings obtained when child numeracy skills were assessed autonomously (Baroody & Dowker, 2003; Sinclair, 1988). Results also indicate that mothers adjust their support and the demands of the task to meet their child's skill level. In addition, promoting an enjoyable affective climate and fostering child motivation to complete the task appeared to be a predominant aspect of maternal guidance. Together, these results support the relevance of evalua...

In Study 1, high school students completed a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice balance scale questionnaire. Their performance was assessed with Siegler's original rules and a revised set of rules that included an addition and a qualitative proportionality rule. Results showed that Siegler's Rule 3 was not homogeneous and that distinguishing specific patterns of answers among Rule 3 subjects increased the diagnostic value of the rule-assessment methodology. In Study 2, we compared rule-assessment methodology to the Piagetian clinical model. High school students solved balance-scale problems within each method. Results indicated an overall match between Piagetian levels of Siegler's rules, with the exception of Rule 3, suggesting again the pertinence of specifying alternative rules.

A negative relation between the duration of primary parent involvement with homework and children's achievement in French and mathematics was observed. Data also indicated a positive relation between the quality of involvement with homework of the secondary parents and children's achievement. The quality of involvement by the secondary parent was the only variable that acted as a moderator between children's verbal abilities and their achievement in French. Results suggested that both parents have complementary roles in supporting their child's school-related activities. (Contains 19 references.)
