Tom White
I am a independent photography professional, working in documentary, journalism, and editorial. My focus is on planetary health, environmental and social issues, inequality and politics. My current research includes the potential of immersive and interactive documentary methods for community resiliance and environmental stewardship.
I’m originally from Yorkshire in the north of England and will always hold true to these roots. No matter where I am, I will always be a ‘Northerner‘, even if since the mid 1990s I’ve lived in London, New Jersey and Singapore, in that order.
I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London where I spent many nights photographing the underground music scene of the city and exploring the streets of South London with my camera.
After graduating from college - and having my camera stolen in a nightclub - I worked in the post production industry for several years. I continued to photograph and eventually I left London to attend the International Center of Photography in New York, where I studied Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.
Since then I have been working as a freelance photographer, expanding into my roles as an educator and curator. I left the U.S. in 2011 and am currently based in Singapore. My work has been published and exhibited internationally.
As an educator, I have taught classes at Columbia University’s School of Journalism and at the International Center of Photography where I taught Digital Photography on the Photojournalism program. From 2015-2022 I taught Documentary Photography and Photojournalism as a part time lecturer at Yale-NUS college, a curriculum I developed from scratch for the College. I also work with the Objectifs Center in Singapore on a variety of workshops and programmes.
In addition, while in the U.S. I have worked with the ICP's Community Programs department and continue to volunteer with social programmes in Singapore. As photography has given me a direction in life, it is my intention to continue to participate in photography based social practice in addition to my documentary and fine art practice.

Singapore is often held up as a model of the postindustrial capitalist age, with economic growth and
wealth generation as indicators of its success as a nation. Admiration for the leap “from third world
to first” is widespread. While it is true that the standard of living in Singapore has risen for almost
everyone, can this extraordinary growth continue for all?
